A new independent living development for the over 55s celebrated its ‘topping out’ ceremony recently.

Central Bedfordshire Council chairman Cllr David Bowater attended the event to lay the final brick at Greenfields, which is due for completion early next year.

The construction – comprising 82 one and two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent and shared ownership – is situated a mile to the south-east of Leighton Buzzard at the junction of Billington Road and Theedway.

Its facilities will be open to the community and include a restaurant, cafe, hair and beauty salon, gardens and treatment and community rooms.

The location was specifically chosen for its proximity to the town centre and nearby amenities such as doctor’s surgery, dentists, opticians, chemists and supermarket, all located within 1.5 miles.

Spokesman Joe Cook for developers Aldwyck Housing Group said: “We’re delighted to mark this important stage of Greenfields construction.”
