New trains and more seats for Milton Keynes commuters - but still no wi-fi

Rail commuters will enjoy a £62million new fleet of trains serving Milton Keynes from Monday - but critics say the new service still falls short.

London Midland Trains, which runs services between Milton Keynes, the Midlands and London Euston, has announced that the new electric trains will start running two months early from October 6.

The extra carriages will operate on some of the busiest morning and evening services to and from London Euston.

But Andrew Pakes, Labour’s prospective parliament candidate for WHERE, says the ongoing lack of wifi internet on the trains means the service is still not up to scratch.

Patrick Verwer, managing director of London Midland, said: “We are committed to improving the overall journey experience for our passengers, and adding more carriages to some of our busiest train services over the next few weeks will make a real difference to our London-bound commuters.”

The new trains, which have been built by Siemens, include plug sockets in standard class, along with more on-board litter bins and 2 plus 2 seating.

But Mr Pakes said: “At long last some better news for passengers as new London Midland carriages are being brought into service 2 months early. But we shouldn’t lose sight that commuters have seen the cost of a season ticket go up by £1,000 in recent years on one of the busiest routes in the country.

“It is deeply disappointing that the new carriages won’t be fitted for wifi. We are a hi-tech, modern city but still commuters and visitors cannot check emails or use wifi whilst travelling to Milton Keynes.

“I simply don’t understand why such big investments are not being fitted with the best technology.”
