Try cafe's new sandwich recipes for charity

Staff get fruity!

Fruit could be the next big thing in sandwich fillings if the results of a competition run by the Culture Caf in Leighton Buzzard Library for British Sandwich Week is anything to go by.

The LBO ran a story a few weeks ago about the company's competition in the lead up to British Sandwich week asking customers to create a special sandwich to be sold in the coffee shop all this week with a share of proceeds being given to the creator's nominated charity.

A toasted banana and honey sandwich will be going head to head with the American classic of peanut butter and jelly (jam), and many more fruity fillings were received by the company. Project Mala – eliminating child labour in Indian carpet industry, and Haiti Relief for victims of the earthquake are the two charities selected to benefit from the sales.

"Banana was a very popular choice with almost one in four having some kind of fruit element. Pork and Apple, banana and bacon and even cheese and Pineapple were suggested." said Adam Fahn, Culture Cafe's managing director.

Once the winner is declared based on sales volume in the cafe for one week, they will be presented with a voucher as a prize that can only be redeemed with an independent business in Leighton fulfilling one of the company's principles in working with local businesses to help increase trade in the area where they operate.

Go along to the cafe this week and cast your vote! The sandwiches in the competition cost 2.20, 25p from each sale going to the charities.
