Wing soldier tackles toughest race on Earth
Rifleman Colin Oliver is looking for sponsors to ultimate marathon challenge for injured comrades.
RIFLEMAN Colin Oliver has his sights set on a gruelling marathon through the desert to raise funds for his colleagues injured in war.
Colin, who grew up in Wing, is looking for sponsors willing to back his plans to compete in the Marathon des Sables 2010.
The race, through the Sahara in Morocco, covers a distance of 150 miles in six days carrying all kit, food and medical equipment.
Said Colin: "I will be one of less than 250 Brits taking part in what has been termed the toughest race on Earth.
"Obviously the training has been difficult...snowy days in England do not prepare you well for running six back-to-back marathons in temperatures of 40+C in desert sand dunes!
"I am running in aid of The Rifles' Care for Casualties fund. As a member of 2nd Battalion The Rifles, I was in Afghanistan from March to October 2009, a tour which saw us have more members of the battalion killed than any other so far.
"Over the past three years in Afghanistan and Iraq, The Rifles have lost 42 men killed, with another 200 injured, 40 of who have received life changing injuries.
"The Rifles' Care for Casualties Fund helps support those injured members of the regiment, their families, and the families of those who are no longer with us.
"Having grown up in Wing, and gone to school in Wing and Aylesbury, I still have a strong connection with the area. The Rifles also has a strong recruiting base in Milton Keynes and Oxford, with many members of the regiment living close by.
" I have now been posted to London and work for the Ministry of Defence. However, on April 1 I leave for Morocco.
"If anyone would like to back my efforts they should sponsor me at the below address:
