Poor away day for Reds
Leighton travelled to Suffolk on Saturday to play a strong Bury side who are amongst the favourites to win the league this season.
Although several other sides will obviously have a major say before the season's finale, Leighton have a poor record against Bury and have lost all five of the previous games between the two sides in both the league and cup competitions, and have yet to score an away goal.
Both teams started well and Nick McFarlane had to kick one off the line early on to deny the hosts, but Leighton were also looking dangerous when they attacked and in the fifth minute a Craig Kench effort was deflected for a corner.
Lewis Hallford then tried a left-footed shot but this was lacking the power to trouble the keeper.
Leighton were competing well at this stage of the game and in the 23rd minute a 25-yard effort by Kench went close without troubling the keeper.
Two minutes later a good run by Aston Goss created a chance for Ben Gallant but his 18-yard effort was matched by an excellent leaping save from Garnham in the home goal who turned the ball over the bar to keep the scores level.
Despite their bright opening Town were looking a little vulnerable down their right flank and a low ball in was converted on the half hour by Sam Reed to put the hosts in the lead.
In the 34th minute a low effort from McFarlane went just wide of the near post as Town pushed for an equaliser.
In the 38th minute a fierce shot by Short flew just over the Town bar, but the hosts' disappointment was lifted a minute later when Coker scored their second goal with a low cross shot that Marsh nearly saved, but the power of the shot was just too strong.
Town thought they should have had a free kick in the build up to the goal when Goss was fouled but the officials obviously did not agree.
The game was effectively over when prolific scorer Underwood scored a cracking third goal with a fierce shot in the last minute of the half.
Town went further behind in the 57th minute when a move down the Bury left saw the ball knocked across the face of goal and Underwood crashed the ball home from close range for his second and Bury's fourth.
In the 59th minute Bury heaped further embarrassment on Leighton when a looping header from Lee Reed found the net for the fifth goal. The hosts had a couple of further chances but then took their foot off the gas when most of their fans were expecting them to carry on the onslaught.
Leighton made three substitutions with 15 minutes to go and tried hard to reduce the deficit but the game was already lost.
They had three late chances which brought three fine saves from Garnham, but Town could not even score a consolation goal to show for their efforts on a day when the superior finishing and overall play of the home side showed why they may well end up as champions.
Leighton's Reserve fixture at Chesham on Saturday was called off due to a frozen pitch.
Reds: Marsh, Cunningham, McFarlane (Scott 75), Lewis, Clifford, Deaton, Hallford, Kench (Garcia 79), Gallant, Porter (Edge 79), Goss.
