AFTER securing the club's best ever league performance for a season at this level of football, we now look forward to two cup finals in a week.

On Monday we take on Stotfold in the Bedfordshire Senior Cup Final at Luton Town. Stotfold have had an excellent season, convincingly winning the UCL Premier League title and, like us, also enjoying a good FA Cup run. They are managed by ex Arsenal player Ian Allinson and are a physically strong, powerful side. It would be great to see a large contingent of Town supporters at the game on Monday night. Please contact the club regarding tickets for the game (LB 373311). We will certainly need all the support we can muster. I am hoping to have a full squad to pick from with Craig Kench, Nigel Maarman and Stephen Root all set to return from injury.

It is interesting to note that the club has not won this trophy for 16 years – not since yours truly was playing for the club! This is a long time in football and I know the players and the management team are keen to put this right. It will, however, be a tough game and we will need to be at our best.

On Thursday we travel to Buckingham Town for the final of the Buckingham Senior Charity Cup. Our opponents are as yet unknown but Buckingham Town perhaps look favourites and will prove tough opposition on their own ground if they see off Ampthill Town in the second leg this week.

Next Friday we hold our annual presentation evening at the club. Whatever happens in the few days preceding this, we can reflect positively on a very successful season.

This time last year we were sitting fourth from bottom of the Southern League – this year we finished ninth, winning team of the month for January, reaching the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup and two cup finals. By anyone's standards that is real progress! All members of the club, players, management team, our excellent physios Nick May and George Lathwell, U18 manager Jamie Green, the ground staff, Chairman Iain McGregor, the committee and our sponsors deserve great credit for these achievements. A big thankyou also to our supporters. I hope we can boast some silverware this time next week!

See you at Luton Town on Monday – Best wishes to all.

Sean Downey, Leighton Town manager.
