LEIGHTON Town made a disappointing start to this year's Cherwell League campaign when they lost by five wickets in Saturday's opening fixture away to Milton Keynes Park at Manor Fields in Fenny Stratford.
Put in to bat, Town opened brightly with Andy Ward and Tom Scott putting on 28 for the first wicket before Ward was out for 14.
A further wicket fell but a third wicket stand of 43 between Scott and Phil Whatmore ended with Whatmore lbw for 34.
Dan Scott, coming in at No 5, began to dominate but the only support he got was from Richard Raine with a quick 17 off 21 balls.
Eventually Dan Scott was the eighth man out with a splendid innings of 57.
Micky Parker (18 not out) and Lee Selfe (8 not out) increased Town's total to 184-8 off 52 overs.
Newly relegated Park, with opener Graham Simpson making 41, faltered a little and at 99-4 the game was evenly poised but Tim Chapman set about Town's bowlers and ended up 65 not out, taking Park to 188-5 for a five-wicket win with six overs to spare.
Best of Leighton's bowlers was Lee Selfe with 2-47 off 12 overs with Dan Scott, Phil Whatmore and Chris Thompson each taking a wicket.
A poor start for Town who collected eight bonus points against Park's 25 points for the win.
This Saturday Town are at home to Oxford and Bletchingdon Nondescripts at Bell Close, starting at 1pm.
Leighton 2nds opened their season with a comfortable 76-run home victory against newly-relegated Brackley.
Town totalled 228-8 off 52 overs, the highlight an eight-wicket partnership worth 81 between Sam Janes (36) and Crispin Andrews (43 not out).
Other contributions came from Ben Friday (34), James Bishop (38), Jack Kempster (20) and Kirk Brazier (23).
Brackley were all out for 152 with two wickets apiece for Yogesh Mistry, Kirk Brazier and Crispin Andrews.
This Saturday the 2nds visit Oxford and Bletchingdon Nondescipts.
Leighton's Sunday team lost by 30 runs at home to Ampthill in their second game in the Beds County League Premier Division.
Ampthill batted first and totalled 237-9 with Alex Walker hitting 108.
Leighton responded with a half-century opening stand between James Bishop (27) and Tom Scott (17).
Richard Raine (29) and Jack Kempster (20) kept the scoreboard moving before a middle order collapse.
Tom Light (36 not out) and Antony Francis (16) put on a quickfire 53 but Leighton fell short of their target.
The TJC Plant Hire Sales & Service man of the match for Leighton was Dan Scott.
This Sunday Town are away against Luton Town & Indians, 2pm.
Leighton's Under 16 age group began their season on Wednesday evening with an A v B match at Bell Close.
The A team batted first and scored 172-3 off their 20 overs. Jack Kempster raced to 50 with eight fours and one six before retiring; Sam Janes hit two fours and two sixes in his 39 not out and Corey Kersey scored 33 before being bowled. The B team wicket takers were Jack Bishop, Greg O'Hara and Alfie Ruston.
The B team, containing a number of under 14 players, made a decent response, managing 88-5 from their allocation. Alfie Ruston top scored with 11 not out with generous support from the extras column.
On Thursday evening Town's under 14 teams were involved in home and away fixtures against Flitwick.
Leighton's A team had the away fixture. Flitwick U14 A team batted first and managed an impressive 134-3 from 20 overs, thanks mainly to 42 from Thurstance and a half century of extras. Steven Moffatt was Town's best bowler with two wickets. That score proved too big for Leighton's A team who reached 90-6. Mark Hanlon scored 20 and Harry Ryan 15.
Meanwhile the respective Leighton and Flitwick Under 14 B teams were playing at Bell Close. The home team had to draft in seven under 12 players to cover for absent regulars and they acquited themselves very well. Leighton batted first and managed 47 all out. Flitwick responded with 48-7 with excellent bowling performances for Leighton from Sam Roberts 3-17 and Bradley Gates 3-7.
