Town suffer second league defeat
Leighton Town suffered a second defeat in the Cherwell League when going down by 47 runs to local rivals Wolverton Town on Saturday.
Having put the visitors in they quickly had both openers out for 23, Al Priestley taking the wickets.
An immediate recovery took place in the form of a 106-partnership between Michael Baker and Kabir Arif before the latter was out to Lee Selfe for 44. Baker progressed to his century with assistance from Kieran Lampard who made a quick 40 in 20 minutes and the 200 mark was soon passed. Baker eventually fell for 102 to a very smart catch by Phil Whatmore diving to his left. Wolverton finished on 257-7, a formidable total.
Best of Town's bowlers was Antony Francis with 3-50, the second being his 250th Cherwell League wicket amassed in just over eight seasons, a tremendous feat. Francis was supported by Priestley 2-39 and Selfe with 2-73.
When Town started their reply Andrew Gosling, Wolverton skipper, soon had Whatmore and Kempster back in the pavilion with only one run on the board.
Opener Tom Light and Dan Scott dug in and put on 101 for the third wicket. Scott was out for 42 and Light followed seven runs later for 49. A seventh wicket partnership of 75 between Chris Thompson who top scored with 51 and Francis (21) gave Town hope but the last four wickets fell for just 16 and Town were bowled out for 210. Gosling bowled throughout the innings and finished with 9-52 from 20.1 overs.
Wolverton get 25 points while Town get just seven.
Leighton 2nds fared better with a seven wicket win over Challow and Childrey 2nds, thanks in the main to an unbeaten 103 from Ben Friday.
He shared in an opening stand of 81 with Tom Scott (20) and an 82-run partnership with Craig Wakefield (48) as Leighton totalled 210-3 in reply to the home side's 206-8. Leighton collected 25 points to Challow's six.
The 3rds picked up their first win of the season with a comfortable five-wicket victory at Didcot 3rds.
Fraser McJanet put them in a winning position with a haul of 5-11 off six overs as Didcot made 127.
Tarunn Mistry top scored with 34 as Leighton replied with 129-5.
A third wicket stand of 192 between Jack Kempster (97) and Shannon Tubb (127 not out) was the highlight for Leighton in the Beds Premier Division on Sunday but after missing three catches they lost by six wickets to Luton Town and Indians.
Kempster's innings included 12 boundaries while Tubb hit 12 fours and five sixes as Leighton totalled 278-3. The visitors got 279-4 with Tubb taking 2-58. Leighton collected just four points for their efforts.
Leighton Town visit Witney Mills on Saturday while the 2nds entertain Oxford and Bletchingdon Nondescripts, both starting at 1pm. The 3rds meet Oxford Downs 3rds at Page's Park, 1.30pm.
On Sunday the Beds Premier Division team visit the free scoring Ampthill Town, 2pm.
