LEIGHTON tennis player Luke Atkinson was on duty for Bedfordshire at the weekend in the 14 & U County Cup.

At present, 44 counties compete and are organised in 11 groups of four, competing on a round-robin basis. The competition is played over three days at 21 different venues.

The leading counties in each group are promoted each year to the group above. Bedfordshire travelled to Batley in West Yorkshire on the Friday.

Due to an accident on the M1 the team had to go straight to the practice courts and booked into the hotel after their training.

Bedfordshire's first opponents were Cumbria. Luke played a brilliant match against a higher rated player and won 6/3 6/4. In the doubles Luke and his partner had a tough match, again against higher rated players. They lost the first set 4/6, but not to be beaten, they then won the next set 7/5. This meant that the boys then had to go to a match tiebreak and won that 10/7. The final result was Bedfordshire 4, Cumbria 2.

The second day saw the team playing East Scotland, who had been relegated last year. Luke played really well again and won his match 6/4, 6/0. The teams were equal going into the doubles matches. Luke teamed up with James Elliott for the doubles, which they won quite comfortably 6/4, 6/2. With the other lads in the team playing well and winning their doubles match, the final result was Bedfordshire 4, East Scotland 2.

On the third day Bedfordshire's last matches were against North Wales. Luke finished off his weekend in style, with another win in the singles. Final score 6/2, 6/0. He then teamed up with James again for the final doubles match, which they won 6/3, 6/0. Final score again Bedfordshire 4, North Wales 2.

This was a brilliant result for Bedfordshire, who had been second in the group for the last two years and now gain promotion next year.
