Fun runners do their homework
Leighton Fun Runners entered a ladies' team and men's team and a solo runner in this year's Greensand Ridge Relay.

The race, organised by the South Midlands Orienteering Club, follows 33 miles of the Greensand Ridge walk starting at Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre and finishing in the village of Northill, south east of Bedford. The six members of each team ran legs of around six miles along the trail, passing the baton at Stockgrove Park, Woburn, Millbrook, Deadman's Hill and Deadman's Cross. The event is set up by handicap against age and gender for each leg, so that theoretically all teams finish at 5pm in Northill.

First off was Chris Taylor, running the whole distance solo and competing against three other entrants from Ampthill and Flitwick Flyers.

Chris opened up a significant lead on the first leg and gradually increased the margin between him and the others to win the race by a comfortable 54 minutes.

It was a fantastic effort by Chris as the conditions were very hot for running an off road ultra distance.

The Fun Runners, competing in the relay for the third time, took on the challenge along with 20 other teams from the area.

Both teams set off at blistering pace along familiar paths and made significant progress against the handicap times.

Everyone had done their homework and with no navigational errors this year both the teams finished strongly either side of the 5pm target finish time.

The ladies finished second in their category, and the men 13th overall and sixth in their category.

Chris Taylor was first solo runner, finishing in a time of 5h 20m 7s.
LFR Team Savic finished 22nd overall and second ladies team on handicap (Tracy Dodd 55m 12s, Anne Hully 36m 40s, Karrie Archer 1h 05m 25s, Karen Kirwan 1h 07m 06s, Kerry Tiller 59m 02s; Helen Dunham 43m 06s.

LFR Team Dunham finished 13th overall and sixth in the open category (Tam Quinn 38m 47s, David Throssell 30m 04s, Steve Harrison 53m 11s, Bob Dunham 49m 41s, Gary Reid 43m 17s Andy Hully 33m 39s).
