Teenage golfers too hot to handle
LEIGHTON Buzzard Golf Club's burgeoning youth squad proved to be too hot to handle as a team of teenage talent beat the Club by five games to three.
Junior Captain Gavin Samuels led the victory trail, teaming up with Richard Hill for an opening match victory, followed by other wins by Michael Conybear and Alex Eddy, Jamie Stone and Alex Smith, and Ellis Scott and Alex Steeds.
Club secretary Duncan Mutton and Abe Plummer and John Bateman and President Kevin O'Donoghue won for the club, with Colin Wilson and Eric Osborne and Nigel Watmough and Trevor Stimpson halving their matches against Paul Watmough and Jack Smith and Matt Hill and Kimberly Jones.
Less than four shots separated the top ten finishers in Leighton's Millenium Texas Scramble, with the trophy going to Tim Hobday, Richard Harris, Ian Down and Colin McLeod, who finished with a nett 56.0. Runners-up were Peter Brennan, Peter Rowling, Dennis Elliott and Colin Wilson with 56.9, and third David Ullyett, Barry Parker, Phil Martin and Geoff Glover with 58.1. Other leading scores were: 4 John Tarbox, Jeff Beasley, John Surguy and George Sadowski with 58.4; 5 Paul Ellam, Eddie Young, Keith Powell and Derek Ellam with 59.1 and 6, Paul Watmough, Ron Pearce, Jeff Wood and Derek Hobday with 59.4.
Former Ladies Captain Val Berry and Jan Buckler have qualified to represent Leighton in the Ping Betterball competition after winning the Plantation Road qualifier with 40 points. Runners-up were Paul Cox and Gillian Chehade with 37pts; and third, Rosie Hartnell and Sylvia Dell with 36pts.
Nearly 80 ladies from 20 clubs competed in Leighton's Ladies Open, with M Ho and G Yeung from Wavendon taking top spot with 34 points on countback from L Bednarek and F Cerosio from Mentmore. Third were J Richardson and A Styles of Buckingham with 33 points; L Darnell and I Redmond from Hazlemere won the prize for the best front nine with 18 points, with J Wheeler and C Line, also from Hazlemere, taking the back nine prize with 18 points.
Leighton's Senior team have had a hot start to their inter-club season, completing a hat-trick of wins after a first match defeat.
Roy Johnson and Dave Newby, George Darbyshire and Fred Ritchie, Martin Broadley and Harry Adams and Peter Carmody and Eric Osborne won in a 5-3 victory over Dunstable Downs, with George Bashford and Bill Blackhall and Alec Jones and Gordon Francis halving their match.
The first home match ended in a 4-3 loss against Aylesbury Vale, George Bashford and Geoff Dimmock, Ron Dickinson and Keith Rogers, and Mike Turnock and Kevin O'Donoghue winning, and Roger Hawkins and Derek Browning halving their match.
The Seniors continued their winning streak with a 6-1 victory over Aspley Guise, Roy Johnson and Eric Osborne, Dave Hack and Mike Gibbings, Mike Campbell and Fred Ritchie, Mike Turnock and Brian Slater, Geoff Allatt, and John Venner winning their games, with Victor Albertella and Gordon Francis halving.
They completed a hat-trick of wins with a 7-1 drubbing of Stowe. Winners for Leighton were Geoff Allatt and Kevin O'Donoghue, Gordon Francis and Mike Bluett, Eric Osborne and Eddie Mehew, Keith Thurtell and Mike Gibbings, David Newby and Keith Rodgers, Maurice Goodliffe and Peter Jones and Derek Browning and Ron Mihill.
