Tips for a healthier game
With half a dozen clubs and more than 3,000 regular golfers within a drive, chip and a putt from Leighton town centre, Leighton Buzzard Golf Club's PGA Advanced Professional coach Maurice Campbell continues his series of monthly topical tips on how to improve your game and reduce that handicap.

Here is the seventh of golf doctor Maurice's tips for a healthier game:

Routine

This is perhaps one of the most overlooked essentials to great golf.
Maintaining a consistent routine is vital for success.
The major elements of a great routine are as follows:
>> Assess the lie of the ball and the wind direction
>> Assess the distance to the target and select the appropriate club
>> Make a committed practice swing
>> Vividly visualise your desired result
>> Walk up to the ball and fire
>> Be consistent

Your practice swing must be an exact rehearsal of how you want to play the shot.

Too many people perform half hearted practice swings, which achieves nothing.

Your visualisation must be as you desire the result, make it vivid and powerful. Walk up to the ball and pull the trigger. Your routine must flow into the execution of the shot.

You must not dwell over the ball as this habit spells disaster.

If you feel you are stagnating over the ball, walk away and start your routine again.

Finally you must perform your routine the same way each and every time.

My routine has not changed for 25 years.

Practice your routine at the range.

Over time this will help you to become a more consistent performer.
