LEIGHTON Buzzard Town Cricket Club opened their 2008 season with a 72-run defeat away to local rivals Dunstable in the Beds County Premier Division.

Newly promoted Town won the toss and invited the home club to bat first. On a good batting track Dunstable got away to a useful start and 42 were on the board before the first wicket went down when Cherry was caught by Lee Selfe off the bowling of
Dan Scott for Town's first premier league point. However a century partnership for the second wicket followed between Keogh and Moody and this set the platform for a later assault by the middle order batsmen. Leighton skipper Tom Light took two wickets in two balls but Keogh (64 runs), Moody (45), Watts (46) and Kilduff (51) gave Dunstable a final total of 257-6 off their alloted 46 overs. For Town Light took 4-44, Antony Francis 1-43 and Dan Scott 1-66.

Leighton started off poorly when James Bishop flashed outside his off stump at the first ball he received and drilled it straight at cover point who took the catch. Andy Ward then played a poor shot at a straight one and was bowled and 11-2 was the score after 4 overs. Phil Whatmore and Dan Scott then set out to rebuild the innings and added 30 runs before Whatmore was stumped off a leg-side wide. Tom Light and Scott then put together Leighton's best partnership scoring 80 runs before Light departed for a useful 28. Richard Raine played one of his typical innings scoring 16 runs off 16 deliveries before being bowled by County spin bowler Watts. Dan Scott was eventually out for 68 runs (including 8 fours) and it was left to Antony Francis (13 not out) and Tim O'Leary (7 not out) to bat out the overs.

Dunstable were comfortable winners by 72 runs and although Town only managed six points from this encounter their young players will have learned some useful pointers for the forthcoming season.

Leighton's Under 12A team opened their season with a comfortable 37 run victory against Eversholt on sunday morning. Town batted first and benefitted for a considerable number of wides. Steven Moffatt, recently chosen for Beds County squad at this level, top scored with 11 and 58 wides gave a score of 97-4 after 20 overs.

When Eversholt batted Moffatt was in the middle of the action taking 2 wickets for 5 runs. There was good support from Greg Gilmour who took 2-9 and 2 run outs from some quality fielding left the visitors on 60 all out.

On Saturday Leighton begin their 32nd campaign in the Cherwell League when the first team plays away against Milton Keynes Park who were relegated last season from division one; the second team are at home against Brackley firsts who were relegated from Division four last season; each game begins at 1pm. On Sunday Town continue their Beds League programme with a home game against Ampthill starting at 2pm. All spectators welcome. Entrance is free.
