WOODSIDE

Woburn Lions Whirlwinds U10 5Woodside Rovers 2

THIS was always going to be a tough match against top-of-the-league Woburn, and Woodside didn't do themselves any favours in the first half, looking sluggish in the heavy conditions.

Midfielders Mason Coleman, Owen Claridge and Luke Williams struggled to find their rhythm. Defenders Ben Crallan and Blake Lewis managed to keep the Lions tamed for the first 20 minutes, but Woburn finally broke through to score the opening goal. Then, right on half time Woburn added a second.

Woodside started the second half much brighter with Joseph Raymen making a determined run down the right. He passed to Mason who whipped in a dangerous cross that was volleyed home by a defender. Woburn applied pressure but were denied by two great saves from keeper Noah Heath and Sam Cook made sure that Woburn couldn't find a way through on the left. It was a speculative long-range effort that restored Woburn a two goal lead and shortly after they scored two more. In the final minutes Woodside started to outplay the Lions, Jay Stephenson was causing trouble in midfield, Joseph hit the post and then Owen scored from a Joe Harley corner, but it was just too late.

Woodside Wanderers U10 4

Deanshanger Colts U10 8

WOODSIDE suffered their biggest defeat to date, however the final score does not reflect how close this match actually was.

Virtually from kick off Deanshanger broke through and found themselves one up after a mix up in front of the Woodside goal. Woodside worked hard and five minutes later were level after a goal mouth scramble.

The match proved to be a physical affair with both teams working extremely hard around the pitch.

A cleverly worked goal saw Deanshanger take the lead again but once again Woodside didn't give up and managed to level and pulled themselves back into the game.

The Woodside boys played some lovely passing football and found themselves carving open the Deanshanger defence on numerous occasion and were unlucky not to score on several occasions, the side netting being hit three or four times and the woodwork saving Deanshanger on a couple of occasions, Woodside continued to commit more boys forward to salvage something from the game and were left exposed at the back enabling Deanshanger to capitalize.

As the match progressed it was clear that it was not going to be Woodside's day.

Well played everyone. Goals – Jack 2, Luke And Brandon. MoM – Jack Veira.

Team: Nat Goodlad, James Wright, Tom Herbert, Jack Veira, Luke Orlando, Brandon Whalley, Dan Davidson, Jamie Leighton, James Heggarty, Ross Janes.

Flitwick Eagles Red U11 5

Woodside Rovers U11 1

A lacklustre performance from the Woodies ended any involvement in the shield competition for another season. It had looked quite promising for Woodside as two well-matched teams cancelled each other out for the first 20 minutes. But once Rovers fell behind there was no way back and Woodies never looked like pulling off one of their famous great escapes. The consolation goal came from a smart Kerry-Louise O'Connor strike when she got on the end of a Michael Davies corner.

Notable performance of the day came from keeper Mark Roberts who pulled off plenty of top-quality saves to earn himself MoM. The scoreline flattered Flitwick, but they were the better side and fully deserved to progress into Round 3. Rovers squad: Mark, Lloyd Milliken, Max Coleman, Harvey Jones, Kerry-Louise O'Connor, Nathan Winters, Alex Batty, Peter Ulyett, Cat Connew, Michael, Conor Drosihn and Morgan Bell.

Woodside Rovers U12 1

Brook End Colts 0

WOODIES emerged from their enforced three-week lay-off due to the weather with a battling and well-deserved victory that owed much to their effort levels and defensive solidity.

Colts were the sharper team in the first half but were always susceptible to being caught on the break by Keigan Smith's searing pace.

Isaac Claridge restored to defence was outstanding, while goalkeeper John Shaw was assured with his handling.

The midfield play was scrappy as Woodies struggled to impose themselves. Colts created a couple of half chances and Oscar Russell did well to make decisive blocks.

Woodies grabbed the all-important goal a minute after the interval as Rhys Davies burst down the right and crossed for Smith to calmly finish from five yards. The game was open and Woodies got stretched on occasion but the defence of Claridge, Robbie James, Luke Boyes and Lewis Pascoe coped well but, none more so than MoM Fionn Bell, who put in a no-nonsense performance and used the ball well.

Woodies were sharper in the second-half and put Colts under more pressure and created chances which they couldn't quite capitalise on to cement their good approach play.

Woodside Rovers U15 1

West Bletchley U15 5

AFTER the snow cancelled a couple of games, this was Rovers' first game for a few weeks against a tough West Bletchley side.

Rovers started well with the midfield of Ryan, Jell, Stiles, Robertson and Callaghan putting in some good tackles.

But Bletchley increased the pressure and scored from a free kick which was drilled low past keeper Cherry.

Some important tackles from the defence of Arscott-Smith, Greany, O'Hara and Simons kept Rovers in the game but they struggled to get out of their own half. Again Bletchley applied a great deal of pressure and scored again before half time, sending Rovers into the break 2-0 down.

Bletchley then scored again 10 minutes into the second half.

After this Rovers got into the game with

O'Donoghue working tirelessly up-front supported well by McGarvey, Stiles and Jell.

Unfortunately, Bletchley scored again to make the score 4-0 with 20 minutes left still to play.

Rovers got a consolation goal when a sliced kick from the keeper fell to O'Donoghue who shot into an open net.

Some good saves from Cherry stopped Bletchley increasing the lead until a neat strike flew over him and into the net. MoM: Stiles.

LEIGHTON

CORINTHIANS

Leighton Corinthians U7 v

Great Horwood

A GREAT morning for a game of football and a great match for Corinthians who dominated the first three periods.

There were some well-taken goals from Callum Elliot and Albert Read. And some excellent defensive work was evident from MoM Reece Pinder. He was sweeping everything away, taking his time when called, and passing the ball back down the lines as well as asking for cover when going forward on a run.

Coach Steve Lowe said: "This young lad is really listening and benefiting from his training ground advice. Excellent match, Reece, well done!"

Keeper Joshua Lowe had only a handful of saves to make until the last period when Great Horwood showed some great spirit forcing him to make three excellent saves and netting themselves a couple of goals. Billy Lawrence and Hayden Jones battled even harder to help out the team and bring the momentum back for Corinthians who then pushed on to a great result.

Goalie Joshua Lowe once again had the opportunity to play in goal for the MK Dons development centrein atriangular tournamentorganised for half term at Colchester United.

He played in two matches for the under sevens age group and made some very good saves in bothmatches played against Colchester United and Northampton Town.

Dad Steve Lowe said: "Once again, it is the experience on offer at the MK Dons Sport And Education Trust that allows Joshua, and all the other kids in this area, some excellentopportunities to develop their skills at a higher level."

Leighton Corinthians U10 0

Moretonville Jnrs Rovers 4

Corinthians of Division 8 took on Rovers from Division 3. Captain Ben Sanders battled for every ball, JJ had another great performance and stopped several attacks.

Harry Cropper also played well in defence and made several important tackles. In goal Ryan Eaton was outstanding and the saves he pulled off were unbelievable. Callum Millar battled well, Chris Tydings was inspirational in midfield and upfront Harry Reid kept the away defence busy. Nathan Wilson came on and continued to keep the up the pressure, Jack Wears determination helped him win the ball on midfield and Sean Hull's tough tackling showed the away team this was not going to be easy. However, the away team were awarded a penalty but Eaton did not want to be beaten and he saved the shot. Rovers took the lead with a top corner shot from a player called Rooney.

Second half Corinthians still battled well. Tydings now in goal made several good saves and kept the tie alive. JJ, Sander, Eaton, Cropper and Millar all battled well with important tackles. Reid and Wilson tried to find a way to goal and Wears and Hull held their own in midfield. However despite the heroics, Rovers scored three more. A unanimous vote for Eaton for MoM for his brilliant goalkeeping.

Newport Pagnell Town Tigers 1 Leighton Corinthians Tigers U14 5

A commanding performance gave Corinthians a comfortable win in their first match for some weeks. They began brightly, putting Newport on the back foot with a succession of well-delivered corners from Jack Ellens and it was from one of these that Felix Long headed Corinthians in front. The lead was soon doubled, Billy Pantling hitting an absolute belter from 30 yards that flew into the top corner. Newport weren't getting much of a look-in with the Corinthians defence of Conor Goodger, Chris Lawford and Thomas Knight in complete control and when Matthew Ferguson burst onto a Rhys Richards through ball to curl the ball over the Newport keeper the result seemed in no doubt.

Ferguson scored his second and Corinthians' fourth just after half time and the team visibly relaxed which allowed Newport to net a consolation from a corner. But this was to be just a blip as Corinthians regained their momentum with MOM Knight taking charge at the back aided by Lawford and Justin Tyas and an accomplished debut from Richard Batten in midfield. Ellens scored an excellent fifth goal for Corinthians following a fine pass from Jordan Lapworth to seal an emphatic victory.

LEIGHTON TOWN

AFC Dunstable Youth v

Leighton Town Reds U8

TOWN opened the game with great belief in themselves, giving 100 per cent, and with some good passing, Sam gave Reds the lead.

Dunstable came back at Town, but Archie and Freddie stood tall with solid defending. Dunstable equalised though and it was game on.

Josh made some fantastic saves and a fiery Dunstable side were being held. They eventually went in front but Town created chances with Charlie unlucky not to level. Dunstable pushed and on the break went further ahead. Nathan was battling hard in midfieldbuta mis-timed tackle gave Dunstable a penalty which they converted. Two more goals followed and half-time came.

In the second half, Town never lost their belief and some great passing between Louis and Edward pushed Reds on.

Henry was unlucky with a shot that put the Dunstable keeper on the floor but it wouldn't go in for Reds. Leo took over in goal and, like Josh before him, made some good saves. Dunstable, though, scored one more and the game finished at this. Reds played well and have come aloud since their first encounter with Dunstable and with a little more belief can move on to the next level. MoM Leo.

Bedford Panthers U9 A 2

Leighton Town U9 2

IN an enthralling encounter on a windy day Town were denied a victory with a last-gasp goal six minutes into 'injury time'!. In the first half Town were against the gale force wind but played some decent stuff with Jack and Nathan getting the ball down trying to knock it around. Alex and Bradlee were strong at the back and Leyton was passing well but Panthers had a little more bite and went ahead to make it 1-0.

David and Nathan went close but the half ended. In the second half Town pushed on and Jack, now pushed up into midfield, was battling superbly. A wind-assisted missile from Isaac cleared the home defence and David ran through to score from an acute angle to level.

Callum was on and made some great tackles to thwart Panthers and Isaac pulled off a couple of great saves. The move of the match saw Town forge ahead when a sublime cross from Jackfound David who side foot volleyed in to put Town up.

Luke came on and was solid at the back and a stone wall penalty was denied as Nathan was through on goal. Jack and Nathan then hit rockets that the keeper saved and the bar hit as Town searched for a third. As full time came and went, the win slipped by asthe referee, wearing an Alex Ferguson Timex, found six minutes which saw Panthers level. A great game, lads, on a terrible day but well played. MoM Jack.

Leighton Town U15 1

AFC Kempston Colts A 3

KEMPSTON started strongly, but Dominic Cooper, Callum Boskett and Liam Edwards met the challenge. Colts' compact unit was difficult to break down and Leighton's best early attempts came from the midfield, in the form of a speculative strike from Charlie Green, a snap shot by Alfie Ruston, and a Tom Coleman effort that flashed just over the bar.

Gradually Town established greater parity, with wing-backs Jordan Potter and Lee Adams bristling with competitive zeal.

Jack Sewell was then put in, neatly rounded the keeper, and saw his shot handled on the line by a defender, amazingly without producing a penalty. Fellow striker Tom Gordon then drew a good save from Kempston's genuine goalie with a cleverly flighted free kick.

Tragically, Town then conceded three goals in six minutes.

After the breakthe Redsfaced prolonged pressure, but Boskett stood like a rock and Matt Fisher's saves and authoritative handling proved vital.

A Leighton break then saw Potter felled in the box and Gordon expertly convert the penalty.

Sub Luke Binding helped drive Town forward, but a Kempston break denied by Fisher's initial save, good pressure from Danny O'Donnell and Potter's impressive clearance off the line exemplified Town's prodigious commitment.

LEIGHTON UNITED

Leighton United U8B v

Bedford Panthers

LEIGHTON started very strongly with Edward Hibbitt and Chris Field quickly probing the Panthers defence. Oliver Culley then made a good run and fired off a shot which commanded a good save from the Panthers keeper. More Leighton pressure won a throw, free kick and corner in quick succession but still Panthers stood firm. A rare Panthers attack saw Kailan Farrugia make a great save for Leighton.

Leighton won another corner. This time Kian Christie found space and fired off a good shot again to be denied by the Panthers keeper.

James Head made a run forward for Leighton and floated a great ball towards the Panthers goal looking for his team-mate Alex Sibley. As it turned out, the cross went in the net as Sibley connected and in the spirit of a good sportsmanship both lads shared the honours of Leighton's goal.

After dominating most of the first half Panthers scored two quick goals before half time.

Despite some brave defending by Liam Lindgren the start of the second half saw Panthers add two more quick goals.

Zoe Potts made a good run for Leighton with two more shots on target cleared by the Panthers defence. Lenny Loader then made a great attack on the Panthers goal but again was denied.

Another period of Panthers pressure saw them add another two goals to their total.

Leighton United U10 Girls 10

Sandy U10 4

UNITED were quickly into their stride with Charley Lambert putting Rachel Moffat clear for a 1-0 lead inside a minute.Savannah Shepherd put Lizzie Richardson through but the shots were saved.

Jade Linders picked the ball up in defence and played Moffat through again and her long shot doubled the lead.Moffat then passed to Richardson for 3-0 before the move of the game saw Lambert, Richardson and Moffat sweep the full length of the pitch for Moffat to complete a first-half hat trick.Charlotte Mulford in goal had had little to do before Sandy attacked in numbers to pull a goal back.Jasmine Page came on and immediately made an impact by passing to Richardson for a 5-1 lead.Sandy pulled another back on the break as United's defence stood off, before Page scored just before half-time for a 6-2 lead.

The second half started quietlyin comparison with what had gone before. Page hit the post but it was midway into the half before Richardson squeezed home a shot following a corner for her hat-trick.United scored two in two minutes through Page and Moffat to go 9-2 up.

Sandy put together some attacks late on, with Lucie Webster working hard in defence.Shepherd made some crucial blocks, including a goal-line clearance, but Sandy pounced on a loose ball for another goal.

In the final minute, Page broke and netted her hat trick before Sandy sneaked a final goal to make it 10-4.

Player of the match was Charley Lambert.

Leighton United U10B 9

Beecroft 0

UNITED dominated from the off. Within the first minute Beecroft's keeper was under pressure with United missing several chances and hitting the crossbar. It wasn't long before Nathan Ashburner soon slammed in his first for United, quickly followed by goals from Jamie Leighton and Jonah Gutteridge, giving United a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes.

Jay Denniston took some super throws and Gutteridge soon scored his second. United played with great confidence and skill and Leighton was having a fantastic game scoring his second and then his hat trick. United continuously attacked and the solid defence of Theo Cox, Alex Aldous-Ball and keeper Brett Smith easily handled anything that came their way taking United 6-0 up at half time.

Beecroft made an occasional break but could not get past Aldous-Ball. Ashburner quickly scored his second and Cox made a lovely run down the middle. Denniston delivered great balls to Louie Clowes out on the left wing switching to Owen Reay up front keeping possession for United. Gutteridge was flying and scored his hat trick quickly followed with his fourth goal. Keeper Smith kept a clean sheet giving United a 9-0 victory. MoM Jamie Leighton for his outstanding performance.

Leighton United U11A 9

Bedford Town Colts 0

UNITED started as an attacking outfit from the start,. the first goal coming early from a corner falling to Jonno, which was scrambled into the goal mouth.

Unfortunately, Bedford then put the ball into their own net after United's pressure was relentless. Jake Shawe, Ollie Hibbitt and Neel Slatter where taking on Bedford's midfield with great confidence and supplying the next goal which was struck by Harry Lander.

Jordan Knight then made it four as the defender Liam McGuire released a long ball to start the move. The first half came to a close with a penalty from James.

The second half also started with a penalty. This time Jordan Davis stepped up and easily made it six. Charlie Cooper in goal at this stage was only a spectator, as Harry Lander hammered home his second. Charlie Beary and Luke Janes were brought back on, and Luke soon added himself to the score sheet, with a well-placed top-corner goal. The last goal fell to the head of Jordan Knight, but all the hard work from MoM Jake Shawe made it possible. Well done Leighton a superb team performance, keep it up for next week's big game.

Leighton United U13 2

Luton United 1

AFTER many weeks without football, United played this game with a raring-to-go squad. The game started with some excellent early pressure from Leighton and after only a few minutes the Russo long throw was headed in by Conner. Soon after a great cross was headed just wide by Ash.

But despite one-way traffic Luton hit on the break and managed to score even though Elding managed to save the first shot. This didn't stop Leighton with Moffat proving a real handful down the right and Mortimer the same down the left.

Half time came and United looked comfortable. The second half Luton really pushed on but made little breakthrough. Russo and Ash were solid in Midfield with debutant Ferry on the right. Turrell proved a handful up front for Leighton, playing with great skill. The break came with 20 minutes to go when Ash was taken down just outside the box. Russo crossed and Brown headed home superbly at the back post.

The real work then was protecting the lead with Harding, Clegg, Bell and Lewis all earning joint MoM for some defending that meant all Luton could do was shot from distance. Superb team performance!

EATON BRAY LIONS

Langford U11 3

EB Lions U11 2

DOMINIC Ryan's brace of goals ensured Lions stayed afloat throughout a tough match on Sunday, but ultimately the visitors were undone by the tenacious forward work of their on-form hosts.

Langford found success from their goal kicks, with repeated shots hoisted above the Lions defenders, who were forced to scramble back.

Even so, Tom Horner's lively pace was sufficient to arrest a series of attacks, and safe play by Adam Bradley, Aarin Johnson and James Pratt put paid to the majority of Langford's striking opportunities.

Heading into the second half 1-2 down, midfielders Mason Ashby, Ben Roberts, Charlie Nevitt and Chris McGee worked well to control the pace and breadth of the game, assisting forwards Alex Poynter, Will Petherbridge, Aaron Gauntlett and deserving MoM Will Juster with a sequence of striking opportunities. In the end it was left to Dominic to scoop up a pass from just beyond the halfway line and outrun the Langford defenders to score a dramatic equaliser.

Keeper Dan Kennell, who had exhibited a succession of fine saves, was ultimately beaten by a slicing shot to put the home team a goal ahead in the final 10 minutes.

EB Lions U9 Reds 1

Bushmead Rovers 0

THIS was only our second match since mid November 2008, and what a match! Playing Bushmead Rovers who are currently top of Division 1, the Lions knew that they would have to work hard to get a result. The Lions had both defenders away so new signing Findlay Christie was needed to play as a defender and did really well. Captain George Oliver and Jack Nevitt were both asked to play as a defender for half a match and they responded by playing a really solid role keeping the Lions strong in defence.

When in midfield Oliver and Nevitt teamed up well with Dax Roe and Jack Quigley who took it in turns to play the striker role. The first half ended with both teams having played some great football at a very high tempo. The second half started as the first had finished with chances at both ends and the match very evenly balanced, with either team capable of getting a result. In the last few seconds it was Roe who scored the goal that finally separated the teams. This match is what football is all about – quality, passion, determination and entertaining. Well done, both teams.

Team: Roe, Quigley, Nevitt, Oliver, Higgs, Luff, Christie.

EB Lions U13 Girls 0

Biggleswade 4

THIS was the first time that these two teams had played, and what a great match played at high tempo!

The first 15 minutes saw Lions pushing forward and giving the opposition all sorts of problems and it was against the run of play that Biggleswade scored. With five minutes left before half time, Biggleswade scored a second and despite some good efforts on goal from Hattie French, Megan Viljoen and Shannon Byrne the Lions couldn't score. Our midfield of Darcy Ashby, Devon Ferguson and Bethan Woolsey were always looking for ways to break down the opposition.

With the score at 2-0 against the Lions started the second half looking solid in defence with Katy Thiel, Eden Scott and Elsa Kirkwood trying to push forward to help get a goal back. The Lions goalkeeper GoM Nancy Oliver had a great match and it was unfortunate that with the Lions pushing forward there were times when she was left exposed which resulted in the opposition scoring halfway through the second half and in the last minute. This was a proper cup match with both sides giving their all to provide an exciting, high-tempo and entertaining game.

Team: Oliver, Thiel, Scott, Ashby, Ferguson, French, Viljoen, Kirkwood, Woolsey, Byrne.

LINSLADE GREENLEAS

Linslade Greenleas Athletico U9 4 Moretonville 1

AFTER the winter disruption to fixtures and training, Athletico headed into League action against a side who equalled them for commitment and in a match that didn't reflect the final scoreline.

The Moretonville keeper was on top form keeping out a number of early strikes – including the unusual approach of using his face, but midway through the half a typical poach from Liggett opened the scoring. Before half time, however and with the action end to end, Moretonville grabbed an equaliser.

The second half told a different story with Athletico getting into their stride with a strong passing game and Kharawala combining with Dimeo, for Dimeo to put Athletico ahead with a well-taken strike. Soon after, a strong cross from Williams on the wing allowed Liggett to take his second.

Despite the strong efforts of Moretonville, Dillamore's MoM Potter showed a new-found level of play in defence with some wel-controlled clearances and intelligent play up the pitch. Assisted by his defensive partner Cantwell and combining with the committed efforts of Axford in goal, Moretonville were unable to capitalise on their chances.

With the game reaching its closing stages, captain Culley who had led the team well in a tough match, took his chance to put the game beyond doubt, adding Athletico's fourth.

SOUTHCOTT OWLS

Maulden Magpies 3

Southcott Owls U11 4

GOALS from Prophet (2), Stacey M. and MoM Scott ensured Southcott picked Maulden's pockets in this hastily arranged friendly which, in retrospect, was a test of character for the squad as Maulden played some very organised and effective football leading Southcott for most of the match.

Chancellor, McGarry, Andrews and Will playing in defence all made good contributions, as did Turley in goal. Kimber worked hard wide left as did Adams with Chamberlain holding the midfield and Scott on the right.

Mattbagged one goal, Scott's sweet strike was excellent, Prophet poached a brace of his trademark finishes, and Kimber heading just over, and Cox who hit a blistering shot which was well saved also came close to glory.

Underpinning the final quarter when Southcott scored three goals in five minutes was the collective hunger and determination of Matt and Adam Stacey. They galvanised their team, chasing lost causes, creating chances and giving them a cutting edge.

When the winning goal went in there were cheers and smiles all round as Southcott had worked hard for their victory.
