Football: Leighton on the road again
LEIGHTON Town manager Craig Wells has admitted that his side will do well to take any points from Saturday’s trip to Bedworth United – and is more interested in their performance than the result.
Leighton’s Evo-Stick League Division One Central relegation fears were not helped by a 1-0 defeat away at Ashford Town on Saturday – making it just one point from their last three league games for Wells’ men.
However, Town did bounce back to record a 2-1 away win against Biggleswade United in their Beds Senior Cup quarter final on Tuesday night, setting them up with a last four tie at Dunstable Town, with either Biggleswade Town or Luton Town then waiting in the final.
Saturday’s trip to high-flying Bedworth is Leighton’s fourth away game in three weeks, and boss Wells is realistic about his side’s chances of picking up a result against the side sitting fourth in the table. He’s more concerned about how well they perform and is targeting a run of good results when Leighton play their following five league games all at home.
“After Saturday’s defeat the most important thing for me is the level of performance we put in against a good side. We seem to play better against the good sides so hopefully we’ll pick up a result.
“On paper we’ve got no right to win, but we know the players can do better than they did at Ashford. It was a poor game and we got what we deserved.”
Wells was so disappointed with his side’s display that he put in ‘seven days approaches’ to speak with three new players about potential moves to Bell Close on Monday morning – a defender, midfielder and striker.
“We need to strengthen in all areas,” he said. “Sometimes you can have honest chats with the players you have and agree to go your separate ways.
“You have to be honest and tell people that they’re not in your plans and they move on. We want to talk to these three players – all recommended by former boss Sean Downey – but there is no guarantee that they will want to join us.”
With Town still desperate for points to secure their place in the Southern League Division One Central, Wells admits that he is feeling some pressure to pick up results, but more from himself than anyone else.
“I have got no problem with people telling me Saturday’s performance wasn’t good enough,” he said. “Nobody was more disappointed than me and that level of performance needs to change.”
