Football: Town eye Cup replay win

LEIGHTON Town manager Craig Wells is backing his side to see off St Margaretsbury in their FA Cup preliminary round replay tonight (Tuesday) after the sides played out a boring 0-0 draw on Saturday.

The winners of the tie will go to Enfield Town on September 8 for a first qualifying round clash and Wells is confident his men will do the business on Tuesday night to book their trip, despite failing to breakdown their lower league opponents on Saturday.

“Calling it a game on Saturday would probably get us in trouble under the trades description act,” he joked. “They played with only one man up front and tried their best to spoil the game.

“We tried to break them down but it just didn’t happen for us, so we will have to try and finish the job on Tuesday.

“If we get an early goal then it could mean we go on and score a few. I’m confident we’ll win.”

Leighton would have travelled to Aylesbury for their Evo-Stik League Division One Central clash on Monday, but that game was postponed in light of their Tuesday night replay.

And Wells wants his team to return to winning ways following Saturday’s 0-0 draw and their first defeat of the season, 3-2 at home to Daventry Town last week.

“It’s still been a good start and we will be looking to get back to our very best,” he said. “We want to score some goals and pick up the pace once more.”
