Freezing temperatures wipe out football and rugby in Leighton
The below zero temperatures made rugby and football pitches unplayable again this weekend seeing the whole fixture list abandoned.
Two games that did battle against the elements however are featured below:
WOODSIDE
Woodside Rovers U15 2
City Colts Jets 3
WOODSIDE'S first game of 2009 was against mid-table City Colts Jets.
You could see the Christmas break had taken its toll but Rovers battled well against a strong midfield.
Jets took the lead after 15 minutes when a free-kick was blindly flicked off the head of the Jets attacker and into the goal.
Rovers kept on fighting with the midfield of Edmunds, Jell, Jones, Stiles and Robertson combining well and drew level when Rovers received an in-direct free kick on the Jets 6-yard box. Stiles took it quickly, finding Jell who smashed it into the net
Rovers held on until half-time with the score at 1-1.
Rovers started the second half strong and scored when a scuffed drop-kick from the Jets keeper found Jones who shot into an open net from 25 yards.
But Jets clawed there way back and scored with a lobbed shot which had keeper Cherry well beaten.
As the second half wore on Rovers lack of fitness showed and the ball stayed in there half for most of the period.
Jets took the lead when the left midfield smashed the ball past Cherry.
Rovers couldn't respond in the last 10 minutes and lost the game.
LEIGHTON UNITED

Leighton United 2
UNITED started brightly dominating the game. Colts rarely got out of their half and chances were swiftly dealt with by an excellent display by the back four including MoM Holden.
However it was left to the three subs to assist in winning the game.
Goodyear put a great ball through to Price who cleverly lobbed the advancing keeper to put United deservedly in front before the half time break.
The second half saw United extend their lead when Lynch's chip found Minney who rifled the ball home into the roof of the net.
United battled throughout, with stand in keeper Perrin up to all challenges in the rare event of a Colts attack.
The only way Colts were going to score was via a penalty, which the referee obligingly gave for a 'ball to hand incident' in the last 15 minutes.
United wobbled momentarily at the injustice of this decision, but maintained their slender lead until the final whistle.
United at their best would have provided a much higher scoreline, but the win was an important confidence booster and early Christmas gift for all those present.
The squad also consisted of Corbett, Dyer, Nichols, King, Ratcliffe, Butler, Cheshire, and Roberts.
