Hectic Year for Lions

Club expanding fast

EATON Bray Lions AFC is at last able to draw breath after a hectic year.

The club provides youth football for boys and girls aged five to 18 in Edlesborough, Eaton Bray, Northall, Dagnall and the surrounding villages.

Only six years ago the club had just three teams and was in danger of folding, but a vibrant new committee and dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to rebuild the Lions into a hugely successful club.

The last 12 months have been the most active and productive by far and they have achieved the following in 2008:

>> FA Regional Charter Standard Development Club winner – collecting the trophy at Luton Town.

>> Obtained an Awards for All Lottery grant of 10,000 and AVDC small grants award of 1,000 and a Bucks Grassroots grant of 5,000 to purchase almost 19,000 worth of equipment, being portable lights for winter village based training as well as supporting kit and equipment.

>> Obtained a Football Foundation grant of 9,000 over three years to develop new teams for the club and improve the coaching and qualifications of volunteers. This has led to over 30 coaches, with 18 Level 1 qualified and a growing number undertaking their Level 2 and UEFA B licence.

>> Taken the club from the three teams six years ago to 13 teams this season and 15 next summer.

>> Worked closely with Edlesborough School on a joint partnership programme to provide power, water, lighting and resources to the playground for use by the school and club.

>> Purchased new goals and expanded the number of playing pitches and developed girls football with the help of Beds FA and will have four girls teams next season.

Spokesman Tim Sanders said: "We would love to promote our successes this year, to thank our sponsors and to support all our volunteers who have built this club from just 30 children to 150 this season and over 180 next season."
