Late strike earns Leighton Town U18s County Cup Victory

Injury time goal clinched victory

An injury time winner by Aiden Denton earned Leighton Town U18s a 3-2 victory in the Floodlit County Cup on Tuesday evening.

In front of one of Town's biggest crowds of the season the U18s lifted the cup after a hard fought match against Stotfold from the Eastern Counties League.

With Stotfold sitting second in their division, Leighton knew they were going to have to play at their best to achieve a result.

The first chance of the game fell to Denton, but the Stotfold keeper pulled off a fantastic diving safe to keep the score level.

Play then swung to the other end and a deep cross found an unmarked Stotfold player who gratefully put the ball past Shaun Parker in goal.

Going down only spurred Leighton on to their most commanding period of the game. Denton scored his first after good work down the right by Kyle Durcan, a second soon followed with Owen Forsythe heading home from inside the six yard area and Sam Slatternearly added a third with a goal-bound header.

Rory Smith, Jamie Bather and Justin Poulton, in defence, were almost spectators ashalf time approached.

The second half saw a determined Stotfoldpush Leighton back with Joe Hooper, Michael Porter and Charlie Fryer having to up their work rate to keep control of the midfield.

The equalising goal inevitably came and Stotfold were beginning to take control. Some erratic decisions by the referee and the pressure from Stotfold lead to three yellow cards being brandished to Leighton players which got the crowd behind the team for one last push. Manager John Forsythe had an inspired moment when he brought on Alex Bradley who worked hard down the left to feed in Denton for the injury time winner.

Stotfold nearly silenced the crowd with a final attack which should have resulted in a goal but to the relief of all they wasted the chance and the game was over. Captain Aiden Denton stepped up to receive the trophy and the celebrations began.
