Leighton teams came out fighting
Under this week's flood-light . . . .
Leighton Town Reds U9 0
Markyate Youth 4
In the first half, Reds started well putting together some good moves and creating some half chances but Markyate broke away with pace leaving Reds wide open and made it 1-0. Inquick succession it was 2-0, and Reds were numb with shock.
Richmondwas pulling off some fantastic saves as Reds composure was regainedand Stanbrell, showing strength at the back, started to play with Bistoletti linking well with Beer to put in Roche-Jones who narrowly put his shot wide.
A break by the speedy Markyate saw a third for them as Reds heads began to drop. A pep talk from the manager saw Reds come out fighting as Richmond, controlling his box, was getting in the way of everything thrown at him.
Giltrow was clearing his lines well and finding Frantellizzi, who put Hollins in, but he too was just wide with his shot. Beer went wide with an effort with Benbrika also unlucky. It just wasn't Reds' day, especially when Markyate broke and netted their fourth. Reds piled on though and Roche-Jones hit the post to compound their misery for a day when nothing went in. MOM: Richmond.
Roman Rangers Blues 8
Leighton Town Youth Whites U9 1
Despite the scoreline, Leighton can be proud of their performance in this cup match against a side ranked several divisions higher and featuring four academy players. Manager Churchill changed the formation, playing an extra defender.
This was proved to be justified with great teamwork denying Rangers a clear-cut chance in the first 10 minutes. Good organisation and committed tackling by Judd and Churchill in the centre of defence were key, with Stevens at left back looking to get forward but mindful of his defensive duties. Johnson and Tyas looked dangerous on the counter.
Rangers opened the scoring, the first of several scrambled goals giving Hickman little chance in goal. With the team working well for each other, heads didn't drop. Andrews & Harrison came on in the second half and showed the same level of commitment.
McDiarmid also a second half substitute was solid at left back. A long goal kick was controlled nicely by Johnson who threaded a precision through ball to the alert Tyas who scored a well-deserved consolation goal for Leighton. MOM: McDiarmid.
