Holmes: Wembley win could see Hatters on the up and up

FORMER Hatters midfielder Peter Holmes is hopeful that if Luton can get past York City on Sunday, it could be the start of a rise back up the Football League once more, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 31-year-old was part of the Town squad who won promotion from the then Third Division in 2001-02, before topping League One in 2004-05 to reach the Championship.

With the likes of recent Conference winners Stevenage in the League One play-offs and Crawley earning back-to-back promotions this season, Holmes said: “I think once you get in League Two, hopefully they can push on from there.

“They have got that momentum now. When we went through the leagues, you get a winning formula and a winning mentality. That's hopefully what Paul Buckle has got and it could happen if they win at Wembley and get into League Two.

“It shows that you can't take the Conference Premier lightly though. There's a lot of good teams in there, who have spent a lot of of money.

"Look at Fleetwood, they'll probably compete in League Two financially and ability wise. Luton have got finacially and ability wise too and I hope they can do it."
