Keeping Wales U21 international Jake Howells out of the starting XI on Friday night came as a major boost for youngster JJ O’Donnell, writes Mark Wood.

The 21-year-old midfielder has impressed in all three games this season after making a surprise debut in the opening 2-2 draw with Gateshead.

It’s been something of a whirlwind start to the campaign for O’Donnell who spent large chunks of last year out on loan.

He has come on leaps and bounds this season and scored his first senior goal to equalise at Hyde on Friday as Luton went on to win 2-1.
