Under the floodlights this week
Leighton Town U9s Woodside Rovers U9s
Great Linford Cougars 6
Leighton Town Youth U9 0
This was played on a muddy pitch which made passing difficult and Leighton struggled to get into this game.
An early goal against them gave their opposition the confidence to push forward and score a second goal from long range. Tyas and Judd making good runs from midfield did their best to supply striker Harrison who had a couple of good attempts at goal. Looking like a hippo that had been wallowing in the mud, keeper Hickman made several acrobatic saves.
Leighton played much better in the second half showing more confidence, defenders Churchill, McDiarmid and Stevens looking much sharper in the tackle. Substitute Johnson, hungry for a goal, fashioned some good chances and hit the post from a well struck free kick, but the ball would just not go into the net for a consolation goal. MOM: Hickman.
City Colts Scorpions U9 5
Woodside Rovers U9 0
Having won 10-1 on this pitch in the previous round, Woodside had high hopes of a cup run but City Colts' Scorpions were more deadly.
It started well with Max Jones and Sam Beaumont dominating much of the first half. With Theo Davison alongside them (not to mention in front and behind) Woodside were on top. But, somewhat against the run of play, the home side went into the break 1-0 up.
In the second half Rovers went in search of an equaliser but all they found was a tenacious City side that forced Rovers into uncharacteristic mistakes, including two goals and a conceded penalty.
But though Rovers were losing the game, they never lost their spirit.
At the back William Shaw made several fantastic saves (including the penalty) and Seb Wawrzyniak made countless brilliantly timed challenges (and one badly timed one).
At the front, the three Rs (Ross Daggett, Rowland Guwa and Ryan Connew) all went close to scoring.
At the death, another venomous strike, proving that the Scorpions certainly had more sting than the Pythons had bite.
