Woodside U18s centre circle for cup success
Under the floodlights this week . . . .
Woodside Rovers U16 3
Blisworth FC U16 2
Woodside Rovers biggest game of the season came in the form of a League Cup Semi-Final against Division 1 side Blisworth FC. With the final being held at stadium:mk, there was a lot at stake and both sides new it was going to be tough.
It was Rovers who had the early chances, with Jell forcing an excellent save from the Blisworth keeper inside five minutes.
After this the game evened out with the midfield of MOM Ryan, Jell, Stiles and McGarvey keeping a strong Blisworth side from creating very much and vice versa.
But it was Rovers who took the lead after 25 minutes when Jones was fouled inside the penalty area. Jell stepped up and scored the resulting penalty to put Rovers 1-0 up.
Realising they were up against better opposition then they anticipated, Blisworth upped their game and mounted pressure on the Rovers' defence. But Mackinnon, O'Hara, Greany and Arscott-Smith held firm and keeper Wright pulled off a great save to deny a Blisworth equaliser. Rovers went into half-time in a strong position.
After Rovers had made such a great start to the first half, it was Blisworth who started the second half the brighter. For 20 agonising minutes Rovers struggled to get out of their half as Blisworth looked for an equaliser.
The pressure finally gave in when Blisworth were awarded a dubious penalty following a hand ball. The attacker stepped up and equalised. This inspired Blisworth, who took the lead a couple of minutes later through a well taken goal.
Bell, O'Donnell and Robertson were all introduced to try and save the game, but the Blisworth defence held firm.
Then finally in the first minute of injury time McGarvey found himself free on the edge of the box. After one touch, and with the luck of the Irish, he smashed the ball passed the keeper for the equaliser.
This spurred Rovers on and with seconds left in the game, O'Donoghue popped up to slide the ball past the outstretched Blisworth keeper's hands for the winner. "A big thanks to Danny and Nigel for getting us to the final!"
