Derek Lindley steps down as Captain of Leighton Buzzard Golf Club on Friday after a year in office during which he has jointly helped raise around £18,000 for Willen Hospice with Ladies Captain Jackie Stimpson.

Yorkshireman Derek, 63, completes his year as Captain on Friday when he will be succeeded at the Plantation Road clubs’ annual general meeting by his Vice Captain, Steve Leng. Derek will be officially “thrown out” at a prize presentation evening on Saturday while Steve’s traditional “drive in” takes place on Sunday.

During his year, Derek skippered the Leighton club team to victory in 13 of the 17 inter-club matches, drawing one and losing three.

He also headed the eight-man Leighton squad that outpointed teams from seven other clubs in Beds and Bucks to retain a coveted trophy by a record-breaking margin.

The Leighton team amassed a record 175 points to win the Bedfordshire Captain’s Inter Club trophy by 15 points, beating South Bedfordshire, Beds & County, Aspley Guise, Dunstable Downs, Buckingham, John O’Gaunt and The Bedfordshire.

But while Derek achieved an enviable success record against other clubs, he fared less favourably playing against club colleagues. His team were beaten by the Seniors, lost against the President and emerged from the Battle of the Titans Captain v Vice Captain clash bruised and battered as his squad went down 13-8.

Derek will also name his Clubman of the Year at Friday’s annual meeting when former Captain John Preston will succeed David Hawkins as Club President. David has stood down after completing a two year stint to focus on his appointment as Vice President of the Bedfordshire County Golf Association.

The money raised by Derek and Jackie will be presented to Willen Hospice later this year.
