Buzzards U17s big game this Sunday

Leighton Buzzard U8

Buzzards U8 went to the Aylesbury Festival on Sunday. They were versus Aylesbury in the first game and got off to a good start, it was fast with a lot of good passing. Score 4-4.

Buzzards versus Cirencester in the second game had supporters on the edge of their seats with great team playing. Again it was a fast game. Score 4-2.

In the third game, Buzzards came up against Beaconsfield. The match was hard and furious with Buzzards defending well and narrowly missing two tries, but sadly the other team had the better hand. Score 1-4.

Buzzards v High Wycombe in the fourth fixture, after a long break, and Buzzards took the first half to get warmed up with a better second half to finish off. Score 3-5.

Buzzards final game was against Buckingham, which saw Buzzards finish the day on a high note. A superb performance saw the little Buzzards over powering Buckingham winning 8-5.

Great tries from Oliver Gronnet, Connor Briggs, Tom Pickering, Callum Campbell, Max Bradfield, Loui Elliott, Todd Carmicheal and Harry Charter.Good all round performance from Connor Ferguson, Hamish Macdonald, George Vincent and Sam Beaumont.Player of the daywas Harry Charter.

At the end of the tournament, the U8s came joint third out of 12 teams.

Leighton Buzzard U12

Buzzard U12s combined with Milton Keynes to form a Buzzard Barbarians side at the Aylesbury Festival.

Buzzards' first opponents were Amersham and Chilterns and they were soon on the front foot due to the excellent driving play of their front row, Henry Peck, Owen Garland and Ben Fisher.

Buzzards had plenty of possession which allowed scrum-half Peter Herring to dictate much of the game. Centres Ben Beaumont and Craig Sharp attacked where possible whilst Troy Perry on the wing had an outstanding game in both attack and defence.

Both sides battled hard for possession and territory and a thrilling game ensued as Buzzards time and again fought their way up the pitch only to lose possession at a vital moment. Final score 0-0.

Buzzards second opponents were Aylesbury and again both sides were evenly matched. A revised front row of Ben Watter, Tyla Sylvester and Kyle Forth proved equally adept at securing possession and the second row of Callum Holliday and Ciaran Hickey displayed excellent skills at both scrum and lineout.

Buzzards No.8 Reece Harris Smith opened the scoring, putting them ahead with a strong driving run to claim his first try of the morning. Buzzards then battled defensively to maintain their lead with good skills being shown by Andrew Worsley and James Herriott in the back line. However a lapse in defence allowed Aylesbury to level the game with a score in the corner. Final score 5:5.

Buzzards third opponents were Buckingham and it was the turn of Patrick Fraser and Tom King at second row to show how Buzzards could drive their scrum up the pitch virtually every time. Phillip Price at No.8 had an excellent game catching and driving with great awareness and no little skill.

George Collins on the wing showed his wiry strength, taking the ball up and finding gaps in the Buckingham defence as Buzzards attacked whenever possible. Reece Harris-Smith scored his second try of the morning with another driving run at the line ably supported by Buzzards mobile pack. However Buckingham put Buzzards under pressure late in the game and were able to secure a try of their own. Final score 5:5.

Buzzards final game was against probably the strongest side in the group, Drifters and it was significant that yet again Buzzards scrum was dominant throughout the game. However Drifters proved an extremely mobile side, well able to counter attack in open play. Drifters scored what was to prove the only try of the game and although Buzzards battled hard to get back into the game, time was against them and the final score was 0:5 to Drifters.

Buzzard Barbarians U12s finished the tournament in mid table, a very creditable achievement and all the players involved can be very proud of what they achieved today.

Milton Keynes U17 34

Buzzards met local rivals Milton Keynes at Wrights Meadow, in near perfect rugby conditions with no wind and the sun beating down on a large shirt sleeved crowd. Both sides had more than half an eye on next weekend, MK with an end of season tour trip to Rome and the Buzzards off to Premiership outfit Worcester Warriors Sixways Stadium, to play Bracknell in the National Under 17s plate final.

Buzzards took the opportunity to give some a run out to a number of players who have been patiently waiting in the wings during the National cup run, to show their worth. This they did in no uncertain terms as they again showed the quality and strength in depth of the squad.

MK set the ball rolling; attacking from the off and recycled effectively at the breakdown, Buzzards defended well individually, but the changes in personnel was clearly disrupting the defensive patterns normally employed. It came as no surprise that MK opened the scoring, when following a penalty for offside, a series of forward drives on the left saw the pack force their way over wide out.

Buzzards responded almost immediately as they swept down field and Byard intelligently used the blind side, to unleashed Kempster on the right wing, who raced under the posts from 45 metres out, the simple conversion, was missed. MK bounced straight back and were soon pressing the Buzzard line again. Their midfield backs made good progress and Buzzards were again penalised close to their own line. MK forwards drove over again from close range, as Buzzards own Tom Jones scored (loaned to cover an early MK injury) for MK to retake the lead. Buzzards then scored an almost carbon copy of their first try, as Kempster was released from half way and scorched over the line with a burst of great pace.

Next Sunday's fixture at the Sixways Stadium, Worcester, will kick off at 2.30pm. Supporters welcome.

Training Tuesdays and Thursdays 7pm to 8.30. New players of all abilities are very welcome.

U17s Coach Rod Keating will be looking forward to meeting up with an old rugby playing school friend on Sunday when his side takes on Bracknell U17s.

Rod will share the touch line with ex-Cedars school pupil Stuart Grazier now from Bracknell, they both used to play in the Cedars school team and for Leighton Buzzard.

In fact Stuart's son Thomas will be attacking the same wing as Rod's son David during the National final.
