First in county pride for golfers

Award is an important cornerstone in ensuring young players get right support

LEIGHTON Buzzard has become the first golf club in Bedfordshire owned and managed by its members to be awarded the prestigious GolfMark.

The accolade is only awarded to clubs that provide golfers with appropriate levels of coaching and competition, assist juniors with a game that will teach them respect, social and life skills, discipline and honesty, reassures parents that the golf club is junior and beginner friendly, and provides a structured environment for golfers to develop their skills with support from qualified coaches.

Club captain Trevor Stimpson said: "We are delighted that the club has met the official quality standard from the national governing bodies for golf in England, and that it has been acknowledged that Leighton Buzzard offers a fun, enjoyable and welcoming environment.

"This award is an important cornerstone in ensuring young people and others just entering the sport as beginners, obtain the right levels of support and encouragement.

"As a professionally managed organisation at all levels – from the green staff to our highly qualified coach Maurice Campbell – we expect no less, but it is reassuring that the standards we set ourselves are those which meet the aspirations of the sports' governing bodies."

> Retired electronics company chief Vince Ganley won the BMW open on his home Leighton Buzzard course with 41 points, and will represent the area in the regional finals at Woburn at the end of the month. The winner at Woburn qualifies for the national final at Turnbery.

> Welshman Ron Pearce had to fork out for a round of drinks after he hit an inch perfect hole in one on Leighton's par 3 150-yard second hole.
