FOOTBALL: Too little too late for Leighton Town
Four-goal mountain is too big to climb
Leighton Town 2
Woodford United 4
The visitors deservedly left Bell Close with all the points on Tuesday night after a disappointing first half display left Leighton Town trailing by four goals at the interval.
Reds were guilty of some naive defending, but they did however did show some real character after the interval and pulled two goals back and might have even levelled the scores with a little more luck in front of goal.
Leighton fell behind in the 19th minute when Jackson curled a superb free kick into the net.
Woodford increased their lead after 30 minutes when King broke through four attempted tackles before shooting inside the near post from 18 yards.
Town looked all at sea against their physically strong opponents and in the 35th minute Charlie Cunningham pulled Forinton back inside the area and Hawkins crashed the resulting penalty into the net for Woodford's third.
Four minutes after this James McNulty knocked a ridiculous square free kick across the front of his own defence which was intercepted and, when the ball was eventually crossed to the far post, keeper Kevin Marsh could only help the ball into his own goal for Woodford's fourth.
Leighton pulled one back in the 66th minute when they were awarded a dubious penalty. Ben Gallant had to take the kick twice after some encroachment, but he coolly slotted it home to give Town a glimmer of hope.
A few minutes later a great effort from 25 yards by Gallant which looked goal bound was deflected for a corner. In the 72nd minute a good three-man move involving Porter, Hallford and Walker saw Hallford slot a low left-footed effort past the keeper for Town's second.
Town went close soon after when they hit the post and then Walker cut into the area in the 80th minute but his shot crashed onto the top of the crossbar and went over.
Two minutes later a deep cross from the right found McNulty running in at the far post and his fierce headed effort went narrowly past the post as Town maintained their pressure on the visitor's defence.
The last effort of the game however came from Woodford when Hawkins cut in from the left and forced Marsh to make a smart save from 18 yards.
Reds are next in action at home to Chesham United on Saturday.
