From the dug out
Limited budget beginning to impact
It is very late on Tuesday night and I have to confess to feeling a little despondent as I write this column.
We have just lost our second game in a few days and the optimism fired by our recent good run of form seems to have evaporated as quickly as it came.
In truth we were really unlucky on Saturday at Sutton Coldfield Town and deserved at least a point from a tough encounter.
Tonight (Tuesday) we were well beaten by an excellent Bury Town team who went to Conference outfit Hampton and Richmond on Saturday and came away with a victory in the FA Trophy.
The limited budget that we have is beginning to impact, as I knew it would.
On Saturday I fielded a team with a number of players who were carrying minor injuries of one kind or another.
Tonight I had to rest them. Quite simply we cannot compete against the quality of teams like Bury Town without five key starting players.
I know that when my full starting 11 is available we can match most sides at this level.
However, such is the intensity and quality of our division that we find it very difficult to compete against the top six to eight teams in the league if we are more than a couple of players short of our best side.
Having said all this we must try to remain positive.
I am hoping to receive some good news on the injury front from physio Nick May for Saturday's away trip to Soham Town.
Howley, Cunningham, Gordon, Denton and Lewis may well be available for selection and this will give us all a boost.
We must also remember that we have amassed 11 more league points to date than we had achieved by the beginning of December last
season!
The players should take great credit for this and remember that I will never criticise them for being out-played by a better side and nor should anyone else.
There are a few people around our club who need at times to take a reality check.
We are a small club at this level of football punching a long way above our weight.
Our players are a credit to us and I for one appreciate the huge efforts and sacrifices they have to make to play at this level. Thank you lads.
The beauty of football is that there is always the next game.
Roll on Saturday – a win and all will be well with the world. If only!
Best wishes to all – Sean Downey, Leighton Town
manager.
