Cedars student wins English Schools National Championship
GOLFING history has been created at Leighton Buzzard's Plantation Road golf club, with champion Gavin Samuels selected to play for England after he won the England Schools Championships and established a new course record.
And to cap that, the club also boasts two ladies in the Bedfordshire County team for the first time – and two players hitting holes in one during the same round (see reports in today's LBO, page 47)
Cedars Upper School student Gavin became the first player in the 85-year history of the Leighton club to win the English Schools national championships.
The 18-year-old who plays off a handicap of +3, hit rounds of 66 and 68 to secure the England Schools title by a one shot margin.
Gavin was one of more than 2,000 young golfers who originally entered the competition in regional and county events, with the top 50 qualifying for the final at Fulwell GC.
Red-hot Gavin, the Leighton club and Bedfordshire U18s champion, will now play for England against Wales in September, and other national teams later in the year.
He celebrated his England call-up by creating a new course record in Leighton's summer Stableford competition, his 44 point haul being achieved with a nett 61, including 10 birdies and eight pars.
