Hertfordshire threaten amazing derby win

Brilliant Beds look set to capitulate

A wagging Hertfordshire tail was set to help them snatch an unlikely derby victory against Bedfordshire at Bedford School today.

Youthful Beds had bossed much of the encounter, but with 18 overs left last night Herts were just 49 runs away from an amazing victory, having been set a mighty 435 to win.

The home county had posted a massive 418 in their first innings, with Andy Reynoldson making 132, Martin Weightman 73 and Oliver Clayson 50.

Herts were then dismissed for just 249, with D Blacktop top-scoring with 73. Wickets were shared around, but Adam Shepherd finished with 3-54, while there were two each for Weightman and Colin Griggs.

In their second innings, Beds blasted 266-8 declared.

Matt Barnes (89) and George Thurstance (88) produced a superb opening partnership of 178 as Herts were set an unlikely target for victory.

Reeling at 252-7, Herts had recovered well with the result still in the balance last night as the News/Gazette went to press. Andy Lewis had produced a real captain's innings for the visitors, hitting an unbeaten 158, as they moved to within sight of a remarkable victory.
