Hockey: Bragging rights go to 3rds team

Following the Christmas break, the men’s 3rds wanted to resume their league activity the same way they finished it – at full speed.

They knew they were in for a hard match against their club rivals who were specially prepared for this clash. But the 3rds pushed hard, and their efforts were soon rewarded when Stuart Hart converted a short corner.

They continued to push on and spent most of the game in the opposition’s half, however the Fledgling kept up an admirable resistance for about 10 minutes before Matt Rust fired home from Hart’s short corner.

Fledglings started to launch some counter attacks, keeping Leighton 3rds’ midfield and defence quite busy, but without ever really troubling them. The game continued in this fashion until three minutes from the interval when Rust scored the 3rds’ third goal with a magnificent reverse stick effort.

That put the Fledglings into attack mode as they went in search of a way back into the game, and they scored just before the break to make it 3-1.

But stung by the Fledglings goal, the 3rds started the second half at a ferocious pace, and following good work down the right side by Craig Gillespie, Rust grabbed his hat-trick with a fine shot past the Fledglings keeper.

This was followed up by further good work and another assist for Gillespie who delivered the ball to Ben Smith to score the 3rds’ fifth.

However, after the 3rds missed chances to extend their lead further, the Fledglings were on target for a second time to complete the scoring at 5-2.

Man of the match went to Ed Skinner for his excellent tackling in defence and Matt Rust for his goals and good sense of positioning.

Elsewhere the Leighton Ladies’ 2nds were held to a 1-1 draw by Bishop’s Stortford 3rds, with Siobhan Henessey on the scoresheet.

That draw came a week after the 2nds were 10-1 winners against Hertford 2nds.
