Jekyll and Hyde Reds at it again

Aston Goss netted late on for Town, but it wasn't enough

Leighton Town 1

Bromsgrove Rovers 2

Leighton fans must be wondering what is happening to their team with recent games seeing them producing displays from both ends of the performance spectrum.

After their excellent performance and win at Burnham in midweek, Town were hoping they had ended their recent poor run. However, yet another unimpressive display saw them lose to a disciplined and organised Bromsgrove side who took the points thanks to two first-half goals.

Manager Sean Downey selected the same players for the second match running, but any hopes he had of a repeat of Tuesday's showing were soon dispelled as Town struggled to find any tempo, pattern or cohesion.

Bromsgrove always looked comfortable and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 25th minute.

Full back, Street knocked an excellent cross to the far post where Finley rose highest to knock in a simple header. The visitors increased their lead after 33 minutes when Lewis in the visitor's goal hacked the ball straight down the middle and experienced midfielder Danny Schepel evaded Stuart Deaton's challenge before running on and then shooting accurately inside Kevin Higby's right-hand post from the edge of the area.

Town had to wait until the 36th minute before mounting a decent move and then the visitors' defence were not unduly troubled by James Lasbrey's deep cross.

In the 41st minute a 25-yard shot from Nick McFarlane was fumbled by the keeper, but when Ben Porter tried to force home the loose ball he was deemed to be offside.

Just before the interval Porter had his shot blocked after he worked his way into a decent shooting position.

Leighton were hoping for an improved performance in the second half, but unfortunately the pattern was similar to the previous 45 minutes with Town lacking the craft and imagination to break down the visitors' defence which had looked comfortable throughout the game.

Town introduced Warren Garcia and Dan Walker to the action in the 65th minute in an attempt to save the game and in the 84th minute Walker sprinted clear of his marker but his cross went just behind Dennis Fenemore.

Two minutes later Ben Gallant and Walker combined to set up Porter, but he then trod on the ball and the visitors broke quickly and only a superb tackle by Deaton prevented Town from going further behind. Town replied when Garcia passed to Walker who cut inside but put his left footed effort wide. In the very last minute Aston Goss headed home from a Warren Garcia cross to reduce the arrears but sadly it was a case of too little, too late for Leighton.

Town will need to lift themselves before their difficult away game at Atherstone on Tuesday night.

Line-up: Higby, Lasbrey (Garcia 65), McFarlane, Kench (McNulty 81), Clifford (Walker 65), Deaton, Cunningham, Gallant, Fenemore, Porter, Goss.
