Late goal kills off Leighton
Lapse proves costly for Town
Leighton Town 0, Chesham Utd 1
A late defensive lapse cost Leighton Town dearly when they lost by a single goal to Chesham at Bell Close on Tuesday.
In the first half the match was played in the middle of the pitch – more like a chess game than a local derby.
Town almost took the lead when a Leon Cashman free kick clipped the bar with keeper Underwood beaten.
Underwood then made an excellent stop to deny Wes Lewis.
Chesham responded with Cox going close to breaking the deadlock during a goalmouth scramble.
The visitors then had an effort ruled out for off-side and Cox hit the post before a good move put Burwell through to snatch the winner with six minutes to go.
Town rallied in search of an equaliser but the Chesham defence held firm.
Lewis was excellent for Town on his return, as were James Hatch and Ben Gallant.
Pete Clifford and Liam Howley were solid in defence and young Sam Scott had an impressive game.
This Saturday Leighton are at home to Romulus – after which the club will be staging a Race Night.
Next Saturday, December 13, they face a tough trip to league leaders Leamington.
