Poor defending costs Town dear
Reds taste defeat in pre-season friendly
LEIGHTON Town fell to defeat in their first home friendly of pre-season on Saturday as they prepare for the start of the new league campaign.
Town successfully saw off Leverstock Green on Thursday with a 1-0 victory and looked to continue their good pre-season form against Tring Athletic at Bell Close.
But the Spartan South Midlands League outfit looked the better side in their 2-1 victory after some poor Town defending cost them.
On a very dry pitch Leighton's passing and ball retention was poor and Tring looked more comfortable in possession - something which manager Sean Downey will look to improve on before the Zamaretto League Division One Central kicks off in two weeks.
The visitors took the lead on the half hour after some poor Town defending left Athletic striker Vinnie Iannone with a simple tap in.
The visitors continued to control the game but could not add to their lead as the sides headed into half-time.
As Town fought to get back into the game, the visitors managed to increase their lead in the second half when a long high ball from the right was missed by the Town defence and fell to Nick Jackson who scored with a low shot.
Town pulled a goal back when Lewis McBride curled one in straight from a corner, but the home side were unable to break down the Tring defence which looked solid throughout.
Leighton will play three more friendly games against Oxford City, Banbury United and North Leigh before kicking off their season with a trip to Ashford Town on Saturday August 14.
