Poor Leighton Selfe destruct!
LB Cricket Club round-up
CHERWELL LEAGUE
DIVISION TWO
Leighton Buzzard 159
Long Marston 173
LEE Selfe reached a fantastic 700 first team wickets on Saturday, but even his efforts weren't enough to prevent Town from falling to a shock defeat to Long Martson at Bell Close.
Put into bat the visitors quickly lost the wicket of Green to Al Priestley as Leighton were looking to start where they finished off last time out against Wolverton.
But Dallimore (15), Lyons (16) and Robinson (13) made stands with opening batsmen and skipper Harry Bowles who batted superbly for his 93, including three 6s and 12 boundary 4s before he was caught and bowled by Tom Light with the score on 156-5.
The remaining five wickets fell very cheaply, four of them being claimed by Light who finished with 5-25 off eight overs. And the other wicket was a 700th Cherwell League victim for that man Selfe as Long Marston were bowled out for 173 in 50 overs.
Town's reply was steady with Ben Friday and Chris Thompson putting on 34 before the latter went for 15 and it was all down hill from there.
Further wickets fell and half of the side were out for 109 with Friday top scoring with 33. The last five wickets put on 50 runs with Sam Janes making a bright 26, but he was the last man out as Town closed on 159 all out in 51 overs. Leighton take seven points for their efforts but slip to fourth in the table.
CHERWELL LEAGUE
DIVISION FOUR
Buckingham 2nds 147-7
Leighton Buzzard 2nds 146
LEIGHTON 2nds were forced to make five changes for their visit to Buckingham on Saturday, including bringing two players in each from the U14 and U16 teams.
The home side won the toss and asked Town to bat first. The new opening pair of Paul Darton and U14 Brad Gates made an excellent if steady start by putting on 73 runs before the drinks break (26 overs).
However, the break in proceedings seemed to destroy the concentration in the batsmen and Gates was out in the first over after the stoppage for an excellent 22, and in the following over Darton was caught at mid-wicket for his highest Cherwell League score of 48 runs.
Sadly for Town only Rameez Dar (28) and Dave Roberts (18) then managed to reach double figures as the away side wasted the excellent base which had been established for them. A final score of 146 on a very fast outfield was simply inadequate.
Buckingham made a bright start and soon had 50 on the scoreboard before losing both openers in consecutive overs to Gareth Benger and Fraser McJanet.
Darton then managed to stump Tomlinson after he rushed off down the wicket trying to slog Andy Smith. Cater batted well for his 39 and Benger bowled him when the scores were level. No more wickets fell and the home side coasted to a comfortable victory by six wickets. Leighton take six points for the game and remain stuck in the bottom two of the table.
CHERWELL LEAGUE
DIVISION EIGHT
Great & Little Tew 3rds 64-2
Leighton Buzzard 3rds 62
LEIGHTON 3rds remain rooted to the bottom of the pile after an eight-wicket defeat to high-flying Great & Little Tew.
The visitors batted first and found opening bowler Murray in unplayable mood. Only Nick Scott (17) and Steven Moffatt (16) reached double figures as Leighton succumbed to 62 all out with Murray taking an incredible 8-15 from 19 overs.
Jack Bishop and Steven Moffatt each managed a wicket for Town, but Great Tew cruised home with plenty of overs to spare, leaving Town with just two points.
CHERWELL LEAGUE CUP
Quarter final
UNFORTUNATELY Leighton's opponents in the third round of the Cherwell League Cup, Sandford St Martin, were unable to fulfil the fixture so Town move into the semi-final, although their opponents in the last four are not yet known.
SIX-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT
LEIGHTON will be hosting their annual six-a side tournament at Bell Close each evening starting on Monday July 26.
The proceedings will commence around 6-15pm each evening. Three teams will be playing in a round-robin competition to find a winner who will progress through to Friday's finals night.
Ampthill Town will be back to defend the trophy they won for the first time last year when they beat Dunstable in the final. Dunstable and Great Brickhill will be challenging them again and Leighton will be delighted to welcome two new clubs to the tournament with Flitwick and Cublington agreeing to send teams.
There will be regulars from Stewkley, William Simmons and Eaton Bray as well as Leighton. It should make for an interesting competition and cricket fans are invited to come along.
