Wedge Systems: Bridging the Gaps

With half a dozen clubs and more than 3,000 regular golfers within a drive, chip and a putt from Leighton town centre, the Observer has commissioned Leighton Buzzard Golf Club's PGA Advanced Professional coach Maurice Campbell to provide a monthly tip on how to improve your game and reduce that handicap.

Here is the seventh of golf doctor Maurice's tips for a healthier game:

Wedge Systems: Bridging the Gaps

If you have a properly fitted wedge system with the correct lofts and bounce angles, golf from 110 yards in to the green becomes a lot easier.

Imagine having only a SW and a PW in to the green when you could be 110, 95, 80 or even 70 yards out from the green, where – in far too many instances – you'd be forced to 'manufacture' a shot for distances that fall within the large distance gap between clubs created by the 8–10 degree gap between your PW and your SW.

Why place your technique, which probably doesn't get enough practice, under pressure when a Gap Wedge makes the challenge more comfortable.

Manufacturing shots can be made much more difficult by your equipment.

While Phil Mickleson can lay open and flop a Sand Wedge off any lie, whatever the bounce angle on the club, most of us struggle with the shot because of the increased bounce on the Sand Wedge.

A proper Wedge System gives you the option to take a low bounce, high loft Lob Wedge. It will be easier to get the ball airborne quicker...and easier to stop it quickly.

Even before we get to your swing, there's a very simple starting point: Are you able to effectively cover all your distances from 110 yards in to the green? Most amateurs can't, and would benefit from more wedge options.

To find out which wedge options would be best for you, please call in and see us at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club Pro shop or telephone us on 01525 244815 to discuss your requirements.

You can also email me on golfmachine@instructor.net for advice.

Good golfing.
