The Golf Doctor

Driver Shaft Length

With half a dozen clubs and more than 3,000 regular golfers within a drive, chip and a putt from Leighton town centre, the Observer has commissioned Leighton Buzzard Golf Club's PGA Advanced Professional coach Maurice Campbell to provide a monthly tip on how to improve your game and reduce that handicap.

Here is the sixth of golf doctor Maurice's tips for a healthier game:

Driver Shaft Length

Let's start with the issue of distance. Most golfers believe that longer length drivers will hit the ball further. They won't. Drivers ranging from 43 to 45 inches in length were put to a test with 50 different golfers of varying handicap levels. The results were that for 90 per cent of the golfers tested, the shorter shafted driver hit the ball further.

For every quarter inch you miss the sweet spot on your driver, you lose about five yards in distance. Miss it by a half-inch and you lose 10 yards; an inch, 20 yards, and so forth.

There is no question that the old adage of 'the longer the length of shaft, the harder the club is to hit'.

In the test the shorter shafted driver also helped improve accuracy by up to 35 per cent. That is a staggering improvement for just shortening the driver shaft by two inches.

How do you know what the correct length is for you? Most people assume that if they are taller they should use a longer shaft. Nothing could be further from the truth. The length of your clubs is not determined by your height; it is determined by the length of your arms, and then massaged from there to the final length by your swing and ball striking ability.

To find out the correct length of driver shaft please call in and see us at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club Pro shop or telephone us on 01525 244815 to discuss your requirements. You can also email me on golfmachine@instructor.net for advice.
