Trio of goals puts Leighton Town through to next round

Fenemore scores to secure victory

Leighton Town 3

Harlow Town 0

THREE second half goals saw Leighton through to the next round of the FA Trophy after a comfortable win over their Ryman League visitors in front of a crowd of 108 at Bell Close on Saturday. Leighton Manager, Sean Downey had to make an enforced change after the transfer of striker James Hatch to Premier Division neighbours, Hemel Hempstead during the week and Ben Porter was chosen as his replacement.

Leighton made a bright start and might have been awarded a penalty in the first minute when Porter's goal bound effort appeared to be blocked by the arm of Anderson. Two minutes later from a corner kick Peter Clifford hooked the ball towards goal and only a fine save from Waite in the Harlow goal kept the scores level.

Both teams were looking for the opener and in the 9th minute Harlow had another chance but the ball was headed over the bar. Leighton replied when Dennis Fenemore ran behind the Harlow defence but they managed to scramble his low cross away before any Town player could get near the ball. Just after this Tyrone Taylor showed some clever skill down the right before passing to Ben Gallant (above) who shot against the near post with the keeper beaten.

Town made a great start to the second half and went ahead in the 47th minute when Aston Goss took the ball off Clemo and ran into the box before slipping a pass to Porter who immediately laid the ball off to Fenemore and he scored with his left foot. In the 53rd minute Tambeson put his header wide of the post from close range as Harlow looked for an equaliser. Two minutes after this Waite produced another good save to prevent Aston Goss from increasing Town's lead.

Three minutes after Fenemore ran through with only the keeper to beat but went for power and hooked his shot wide of the post. Fenemore was then foiled by the keeper who made a decent save at the foot of the post after a good three man move. Leighton eventually increased their lead in the 76th minute with a fine effort by Porter. The ball fell to him just inside the box and the striker neatly side stepped his marker before curling a fierce right footed shot around the keeper and high into the net.

Town were well in control now and in the 85th minute after a cross was headed out to Ben Gallant he put his volley over the bar. In the 89th minute Fenemore again ran at the defence and Waite had to punch his fierce shot over the bar to deny Town a third goal. From the resulting corner Fenemore scored his second and Leighton's third with a spectacular overhead shot to clinch the victory.

This was a good win for Town on a day when conditions did not help good football and Harlow will be pleased that their keeper Waite was on top form or the score might have been even greater in Leighton's favour.

Town looked solid after switching to a back four and Ben Porter gave the Leighton fans a glimpse of his true abilities with a wonderful second goal.
