Rugby: Buzzards back with great win!

LEIGHTON Buzzard began their promotion challenge with a strong 38-3 home win over Biggleswade on Saturday.

Although these two teams had played each other many times in the past, this was in fact the first league meeting between the two sides with Buzzards coming down and Biggleswade newly promoted into the Midlands 2 East South division.

The visitors came out of the start blocks strongly and had the first chance of points after the first of many penalties was awarded on the home side’s 10m line. But the Biggleswade stand-off was unable to convert and Leighton were off the hook.

Buzzards then had a break of their own when newly returned Jack Whitehouse stepped inside the defending back line and set off for the try line. A neat pass to Jack Micans put him in under the posts and the hosts took the lead, with Micans converting for 7-0.

The game settled into a typical first game of the season with a few knock-ons and mistakes creeping into both sides before Biggleswade managed to get on the scoreboard with a penalty after 17 minutes.

But two tries in two minutes for Buzzards broke the visitors’ spirit – the first for new second row Ed Taylor, scoring in his first league appearance for Leighton and then man of the match Andy Jenkins got on the board. Both tries were converted by Micans to make it 21-3 to Buzzards.

Just before the half time whistle Jenkins added another to extend their lead to 26-3 and confirm the bonus point for four tries.

With the new law allowing rolling subs being used, Leighton managed to control the game and used their replacements wisely as Biggleswade tried attacking from all areas, but were unable to get over the whitewash due to stout defending and good possession from the home side.

Taylor added his second try of the game half through the second half when a break from a lineout sent Buzzards’ forwards charging to the visitors’ line, with only the full back to beat. Good hands put Taylor over to extend their lead to 31-3.

There was still time for another score as Micans added his second try to round off a very enjoyable afternoon for a large home crowd.

Next up is a trip to Lutterworth this Saturday.
