THE sun came out and so did the crowds for the annual village fete, held in the grounds of the Old Rectory by kind permission of Pippa and James Naylor.

Stalls included white elephant, books, plants, cakes, produce, second-hand toys and tombola.

There were plenty of refreshments such as a Pimms stall, pancakes, burgers and, of course, the popular cream teas. Sideshows included bowling, coconut shy, hook the bottle, barrow of booze, bricks, a grand raffle, pony rides, bouncy castles and face painting.

Entertainment was provided by the Hemel Hempstead Brass Band, the accordion band and a display by the Electralite Majorettes, plus vintage tractors and an ambulance display.

Raffle winners were J Lamson, Dr Healey, Z Zelent, Bob and Liz, and k Tarvitt.

Scarecrow winners were: K Dixon, The Toosey family, Hydie and the Nursery School.

St Nicholas Church was open and had been beautifully decorated by the Variety Club Ladies Club, parish council, parochial church council, orchard ground committee, the Roman Catholics, Children's Corner and the Nursery School. The day ended with a pig roast at the Unicorn ,accompanied by music from The Rowsham Band.

Sunday evening concluded the weekend with a songs of praise in the church with Evelyn Griffiths as organist.

Proceeds from the weekend will be shared between St Nicholas Church, the village hall and orchard ground.

Rambling Club members held an additional walk on Sunday and visited the delightful gardens of Lord and Lady Carrington at Bledlow Manor.

There were many varities of roses, delphiniums dotted around the gardens which included Corade, Torus, Immortality, Rainbird, Pomegranates. Taking a break for tea served in the gardens, the group visited the Lyde sunken garden where the River Lyde flows off the hillside and where the train on the Watlington-Chinnor-Princes Risborough could be seen on its journey through the trees.

The next stop was a visit to Holy Trinity Church, dating back 800 years which still has the original south door (dated 1250), an oak lectern with an eagle mounted on it, various interesting wall paintings,an organ built by a Leighton Buzzard firm, Allerton and Son, in about 1806 and new gargoyles on the north side of the tower, one of which being Lord Carrington.

At Wednesday evening's parish council meeting chaired by Cllr Peter Shorrock, members were very concerned about the street light switch off on the A418 and that people will be getting on and off buses in pitch darkness, and also the height of the grass verges was a concern. Cllr Colin Higgs was asked to use his pressure on Bucks County Council to get those cut back.

Councillors were still concerned about the storm drainage, or lack of it, of the Hunters Way development and the alteration of the driveway of 22 The Green onto the new site entrance.
Cllr Richard Clarke reported he had inspected the play area equipment and everything was passed for safety, but quotes were to be obtained to renew part of the fencing.

A member of the public had researched war graves of the two world wars of people from the village and put it into book form which he would like to present to the church at the Remembrance Service.

Members of Aston Abbotts and Cublington Ladies Club met in the church room for their fortnightly Thursday afternoon meeting.

The chairman Joan Alexander welcomed everyone, and after a short business meeting, welcomed Colin Higgs as quiz master for the afternoon. Most of the questions were connected to Buckinghamshire, like buildings, churches, events and some on cookery and TV programmes.

Tea hostesses were Joan Alexander and Mary Morris, and raffle winners were Joan Alexander and Shirley Ford.

All members were reminded of pick-up times for the outing on July 3 to Bourton-on-the-Water (Cublington 9.30am then Aston Abbotts, returning by 5pm).
