PITSTONE man Mark Kitson successfully completed the Three Peaks Challenge, in which he climbed three of the highest mountains in Britain in one day.
Mark, Senior Head of Costa International, took part on the challenge to raise money for the Costa Foundation, along with a 28 of his colleagues. He said: “It was absolutely gruelling. Our team consisted of some people who had climbed before and some who hadn’t. I have been climbing for about 20 years so I had to help out the less experienced climbers.”
The challenge was to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in one day, no easy task.
“It took about 34 hours from start to finish, but the amount of determination and grit shown by everyone was amazing. The conditions were wild, quite heavy winds and a lot of rain, but even though everyone was wet through they were delighted to complete the challenge.”
The Costa Foundation funds projects set up in coffee growing countries in order to put something back into the community. Mark stressed the importance of the project, saying: “We thought it was important to put something back into these countries. Rather than just donating money, the Costa Foundation sets up projects which will benefit the communities”.
Individually Mark raised just over £1,500 which will go towards the building of two new classrooms and a Headmaster’s office at Mushasha Primary School in Ntungamo, Uganda, a school built by The Costa Foundation last year. Due to the success of the project, the school desperately needed new facilities to accommodate new pupils and thanks to the efforts of Mark and his team, they will now be able to afford them.
