This week's youth soccer roundup
LEIGHTON UNITED
Leighton United U8 V Stevenage Borough (Filmergraphic Mini League).
UNITED faced their toughest challenge against well organised and skilful Stevenage. From the blow of Rob Walker's whistle united meant business.
United were pressing their opponents from the very start with a passing master class. Louis Walker had a crack at target but was denied by the keeper.
More pressure from united with shots at goal from Charlie Pattison, Walker and Jack Young but that first goal still eluded them. Stevenage defended well after a pressurized passage of play from united.
Borough stepped up the pace with some great attacking runs but united defence was rock solid in the hands of Max Pauland Jake Frost Dicker.
Finally Stevenage broke the deadlock and scored the first goal and, just before half time, scored again.
In the second half united finally got that first goal. Stevenage lost one of their players early on in the second half but continued to apply the pressure with another well worked goal. United were down but showed some real character to come back and level the game with Walker.
Stevenage came back again with another goal and just before full time Adam Hurley levelled the game.
Leighton Utd U8B vs Clapham Colts U8
LEIGHTON'S Hibbitt passed to Loader whose shot was forced wide .Great defending from Hibbitt, Christie and Potts. Clapham shot which saw James Head make a great save.
Clapham were soon on the attack again with Potts and Field defending. Clapham struck again which produced Head's best save of the game.
Leighton attacked with Farrugia's pass finding Sibley who scored. Clapham forced an equalizer. Leighton's Oliver Culley cleared off the line. The corner kick saw the ball find it's way into the Leighton net.
After the break Leighton took control of the game with Lindgren and
Sinatra proving great in defence. Leighton's forwards created many chances with the ball moving in 'slow motion' across Clapham's goal but not into the net. Clapham made a rare break and bagged their 3rd goal.
Leighton laid siege to the Clapham goal in the last ten minutes including Head striking a great shot which was stopped by a great save. Leighton created more half chances but could not bag those elusive goals.
Flitwick Eagles 2
Leighton United 0
ON a miserable day united provided a lacklustre performance against unbeaten Flitwick, which saw them fall further behind the top four.
In the first period united were camped in their half hardly venturing out and conceded 2 soft goals, due to poor marking.
There seemed to be no bite in the team's tackling and when the ball was won, it was soon squandered.
The second half's performance was better in that united had more of the game and got at the opposition but united still dwelt on the ball too long and got caught in possession too often.
The home keeper was not tested as cannot recall an effort on goal, with players seeming reluctant to shoot when the rare opportunities presented themselves.
Their three defeats have been to top 4 teams away from home, and United should take the positives from this and hopefully get their season back on track, next week.
The squad consisted of Ben Perrin, Joe Holden, Adam Dyer, Nathan Lynch, MOM Matt Nichols, Charlie King, Tom Ratcliffe, Matt Butler, Ryan Lafferty, Ryan Minney, James Cheshire, Ollie Price, Sam Roberts, and Jamie Goodyear.
Leighton United U10B 13
Wootton Rangers 0
RIGHT from the start united dominated the game, keeping possession of the ball and attacking continuously at their keeper, who had no time to rest.
Nathan Ashburner made some great runs and took a couple of shots but was unlucky. Alex-Aldous Ball dealt with anything that came his way, giving keeper Brett Smith, a quiet morning with not much to do. It wasn't long before the flood gates opened and united kept banging them in, taking us 10-0 up at half time.
Manager Brian Cox took this opportunity to mix things up for united, giving him a chance to try a few different ideas.
United soon notched up another three goals taking the score to 13-0.
Wootton Rangers who never let their heads go down and battled to the end.
Goals came from Louie Clowes 4, Jay Denniston 3, Theo Cox 3, Jamie Leighton 1, Chris Lane 1, and Jonah Gutteridge 1.
MOM went to Owen Reay for his great all-round performance and for his goal set ups.
Eastcotts U10A 8
Leighton Utd U10D 2
ON a freezing cold day united travelled to Eastcotts who are a division higher to play the first round of the cup.
Not long into the game the strength of Eastcotts proved vital as they forced a corner and scored from it. POM Nickolas couldn't do much about it.
United battled well but soon found themselves 2-0 down. This seemed to buck them up and a great move from Zoe to Oliver found Grant who finished well. Five minutes later Grant scored again to equalise.
This stunned Eastcotts for a while but they soon found themselves back in front. With Louis and Joel at the back and Jay, Zoe and Oliver trying to support Grant Leighton were pinned in their own half for most of the second half as Eastcotts proved to be too strong. Robert came on and battled well. United had chances but could not take them with excellent goal keeping from Eastcotts.
Stotfold Girls U10 2 Leighton United Girls U10 4
UNITED forced a number of corners. Stotfold hit back but united's defence of Lucie Webster and Jade Linders held firm.
Charlotte Mulford was called into action early on to make a save but Stotfold took a 1-0 lead. United attacked through Alisa Chapman. Rachel Moffat forced a corner, but Stotfold counter attacked and Mulford had to save well to keep united in the game.
Moffat passed long to Lizzie Richardson who beat two defenders and slotted home an equaliser.
Moffat saw a thunderous shot well saved by the keeper.
The half time score possibly flattered Stotfold, but the scoreline moved to 2-1 to united after a slick move between Charley Lambert and Richardson who tucked away her second.
Stotfold were awarded a penalty for handball, but Mulford deflected the shot. United's defence was tested again just before full time and a cross shot squirmed in to bring the hosts level two minutes from time.
Extra time ensued. Jasmine Page put a long shot into the bottom corner to restore United's lead. Page then broke away again, passed to Richardson who netted her third hat-trick of the season and a final score of 4-2 to United.
Leighton Utd U11 Girls 1 Houghton Regis Girls 2
A THRILLING cup game which united should have won, but didn't take their chances. United went down 1-0 after a mix up and Charlie in goal had no chance.
The defence of Georgia and Sarah played well, with Niamh, Abigail and Sammy in midfield battling and trying to help Zoe up front. A well taken second goal saw united 2-0 down at half time.
The second half saw united play a lot better with the introduction of Miave and Taylor driving forward. United sneaked a late goal from Zoe.
GOM Sammy
Leighton United U14 Girls 4
Chesham United Girls 1
IT took the force of a committed united side when Rachel Quinn set up Jodie McClelland who blasted home. GOM Sophie Mulvihill returned to partner Aby Dolan at the back and kept Chesham's strong forward out of the game.
Skipper Jodie Molloy continued to lead her team and the girls played some good football, McClelland was again rewarded with her second and Leighton's second midway through the first half.
Beth Hill came on for the ever improving Shannon Butler and did a sterling job in an unfamiliar position.
At the start of the second half Beth Taylor set up Quinn who was unlucky not to score but made amends when she was quick to react to an unusual error from their opponents and McClelland drove to complete her hat-trick.
The girls continued to create chances with Stephanie Johnson setting up Grace Yee who was unlucky not to score on this occasion.
Keeper Paige Blacow deserves a special mention due to another consistent game and was unlucky to lose her impressive record.
In the dying minutes Yee made 4 with a shot which left the keeper with no chance, the goal rounded off another superb performance.
SOUTHCOTT OWLS
Linslade Greenleas Dynamo U7 Southcott Owls U7
All players should take credit after another thoroughly entertaining local derby.
Ryan Smith opened the scoring for Dynamo and the home team pressed but were thwarted by excellent saves from the Owls' keeper.
In the second quarter Charlie Waple-Moors went close and Dan Hodey and Smith defended strong pressure from the Owls well.
Then followed a moment of pure skill from Hodey which was reminiscent of the great goal by Dennis Bergkamp a few years ago. With his back to the goal he flicked the ball with the outside of his foot beyond two defenders and turned before slotting home.
Owen Merrington then added a third before half time following a good run. In the second half both teams made changes. Southcott had much of the play and were unlucky not to have pulled a goal back.
MOM and Captain Hodey then slotted home his second following a mazy run.
In the final quarter Waple-Moors and Smith added goals. Jack Darrall and Harry Eacott both defended well as Southcott pressed again, forcing keeper Emily Heale to make a good save.
A consolation goal at the end did little justice for the efforts the Owls' players had put in.
Southcott Owls U8 v Greenleas
AN excellent team performance saw Southcott win strongly against an attacking Greenleas side.
Honours were even in the first quarter until Benedict Turley shot he ball over the Greenleas goal line. Strong defending by Miles Drabwell, Karl Waydick and Remington Lane ensured the score remained the same until Jake Saunders set off on an excellent run and slipped the ball in the net to make it 2-0.
Greenleas began passing the ball but were kept at bay by Connor James in defence and Benedict Turley in goal.
Southcott then went three ahead from another Jake Saunders goal.
Greenleas applied further pressure until they scored from a shot on the right of the penalty box. However, Tommy Johnston subsequently took the ball around the goalkeeper and scored for Southcott.
Greenleas came back again with a goal to make it 4 – 2. But Southcott were too strong in the final quarter with several attacks, including a shot from Lauren Avery and one from Miles Drabwell which hit the crossbar.
Further goals near the end of the game from Craig Rattray and Jake Saunders ensured that the game was put beyond Greenleas' reach.
Southcott U11 1 Luton Borough 0
FRASER Prophet's last-minute goal snatched a surprise victory for Southcott prompting ecstatic cheers from players, coaches and spectators alike.
In difficult conditions, Southcott were often on the back foot having to defend in numbers for most of the game. They were made to work very hard by Luton but put in a determined team performance in which every player new they had been in a very tough game. It was not pretty but in the end it was effective.
Matt and Adam Stacey proved again that if you keep working and chasing the chances will come.
Nickie Chamberlain used his extra pace and fitness to clear loose balls and break down attacks. Alex Chancellor (MOM) defended resolutely making tackle after tackle andJacob Turley (MOM) made several instinctive saves to keep his team in the game.
Finally, well done to Chris Cox (and his mum!) for turning out at short notice.
Southcott Owls U13s 3
Barton Rovers B U14s 5
FROM the start of the match Southcott were on top. The midfield of Murray, Foulger and Messam were winning everything and spraying the ball into useful positions.
It was against play that Barton scored in quick succession. This knocked the wings out of The Owls' sails and heads started to drop.
A rout won ball over the top (not the way Southcott like to play) and found Moffat, who struck home the only reply in the first half. 1-4 at half time.
The defence of Quinn, MOM Clegg, Gillings, Tift, Thomas and Bell played with more gusto in the second half and held well.
Goal of the match came from a true Owls' move. Down the line from Foulger to Capt Hearn who passed across, Brown letting it go for Gillings to thump home. Even away supporters applauded.
Barton replied with their fifth and on the last play in the game a corner was converted with a headed goal from Clegg. Bramston played excellently in goal, supporting the defence, almost being a last defender.
LEIGHTON TOWN
Roman Rangers U8 (yellow) v Leighton Town U8s
NOTHING fazed Thomas in goal. Molly and Jack played up front with some great passing and moving. Harvey, Lloyd and Connor M were in defence.
Benjamin came on and made a difference in defence and Molly stayed up front with Harvey who was first to score.
There was great passing from Connor M to Lloyd, who took the ball past one player and scored his first goal.
Thomas came out of goal into defence and made some great runs towards the goal.
Benjamin was in goal. He stood his ground, made some great saves and the kicks from inside the box were superb.
Harvey seemed unstoppable with his pace and ball control, he scored another great goal. Jack and Molly made some great runs towards goal.
Roman players flooded Leighton's box and Connor M made a great tackle and passed the ball to Thomas, who passed to Molly then Jack. Molly ran into the box and Jack passed to Molly who scored a great goal.
Taylor came on with Harvey and passed the ball well but couldn't quite score.
The last goal came from all the team passing and Thomas scored his first goal from the halfway line, with a powerful kick.
AFC Kempston Colts v
Leighton Town Reds u8
ON a Siberian morning a good game of football took place. In the first half colts came at town but Freddie and Leo were strong and sturdy at the back.
In midfield Charlie and Edward were battling and Nathan and Sam leading the line well in attack. Town were trying to pass and get their game going but found it hard in cold conditions and colts stunned them with a well taken goal. Keeper Josh then made a great save to deny colts again.
A half-time pep talk brought town to life and with Louis and Henry on they started to pass and move well. It was end to end stuff and an equalizer came when Sam drilled the ball into the back of the net.
The midfield duo of Edward and Charlie took a grip and with the game heading for a draw Louis ran the ball from defence and was harshly brought down when clean through. Louis dusted himself down to drive in the free-kick and give Reds a deserved win.
Some great defending by colts stopped town adding to their tally but overall a great team performance in difficult conditions.
M.O.M Leo
Cranfield Colts Tigers 0
Leighton Town U10 1
TOWN started lively making the early pressure with Charlie Waters having a shot on goal and Connor Rowson battling hard in midfield. Anthony Ball and Rhys Cullen combined well on a number of occasions on the right wing to put the pressure on the Tigers' Defence.
It wasn't all one way traffic and the dependable pair of Kieran Read and Alessandro Frantellizzi worked tirelessly in defence to tame the Tigers' attack.
Half time and with the score still level, the Tigers came close with a goal-mouth scramble that somehow town goalie David Alexander managed stop the ball crossing the line. Luke Mills then came close with a shot after a run on goal.
But the deadlock was broken when Charlie blasted a shot from outside the box that hit the back of the net. Substitute Mathew Callow came on and his running caused the Tigers trouble.
A hard fought win with opposition that weren't pussy cats and the whole team deservedly shared the MOM award.
Sharnbrook FC 5
Leighton Town Spartans 2
(after extra time)
FIELDING a heavily depleted team, Leighton and opposition Sharnbrook both started sharply with Sharnbrook trying the stalwart defence of Farrugia, Franklin, Sutton and Wavish with no success.
A quality throw-in from Ballard to Whitby provided the ball for Sanderson, who claimed the first goal of the match.
The rest of the first half was dominated by the midfield of Ballard, Koch, Patterson, Whitby and Waldock with attempts on goal denied. Sharnbrook drew level with a converted corner putting both teams equal at the break.
Stand-in keeper Cox, denied Sharnbrook on numerous occasions despite this being his first time in goal for the club. However he was extremely unlucky to pick the ball out of the back of the net again following a deflection.
During the last minute of the game Leighton again showed their never-say-die manner and brought the score level again after a fine goal by Whitby.
During extra time Town were unlucky not to forge ahead after the woodwork denied a fine strike by Franklin.
During the final 20 minutes it was Sharnbrook who had the luck of the draw and were able to proceed into the next round of the County Cup.
Leighton Town U14 Girls 4
Vale Reds 4
TOWN started brightly with some good link-up play from Sym and Rosie to Charlotte who slotted the ball under the Reds' advancing keeper. Rosie soon got the second with another ball slotted under the Reds' keeper.
The Reds were straight out of the blocks and the ball went from one end to the other with Daisy and Kerry breaking up most attacks and Rosie having a good battle up front.
Reds worked the off-side well and Danielle and Rosie were caught out a lot. Danielle ran the right side well and was justly rewarded with POM; her goal coming from a through ball and using her pace, finishing well.
The fourth came from Sym who kept her cool and finished well.
The second half started and Reds threw themselves into the game, being first to much of the ball.
Amy pulled her hamstring and had to be replaced in goal by a reluctant but competent Kirsten leaving town at sixes and sevens. Kirsten played well but had to face a penalty almost immediately after pulling on the jersey.
Town could have finished it off on the break, but the draw was probably a fair result.
LEIGHTON
CORINTHIANS
Shillington U11 1 Leighton Corinthians U11 9
AFTER the disappointment of losing their first game of the season last week, Corinthians bounced back in the best possible way with a comprehensive away win against a spirited Shillington side on a bitterly cold morning.
The whole team looked determined from the first whistle as they completely overwhelmed their opponents, being first to every ball and knocking the ball about in a confident manner.
The defensive unit of Oliver Pacey, Zak Elliott, Louis Brown, Archie Dandy and George Wyatt dealt with the Shillington attacks confidently, leaving Oliver Rhodes with a quiet morning in goal.
MOM Harry Cawood held the midfield leaving Joe Briars, Ewan Starling, David Johnson and Bill Batten who all worked tirelessly and unselfishly to supply the forward line of Callum Kidney and Oliver Richards who both grabbed a brace and James Buckman who also put his name on the score sheet.
Batten weighed in with his second hat trick of the season with an og completing the scoring.
Wing Raiders Jaguars 1
Corinthian Tigers U14 5
RIGHT from the off Tigers took the game to Wing and their goalkeeper made some good saves from early efforts from Jack Ellens and Felix Long.
There was a shot cleared off the line and a couple more just wide before Peter Wilmer opened the scoring for Tigers. He followed this up by netting twice more, set up by Matthew Ferguson and Adrian Nicholson. Billy Pantling made it four with a shot from the edge of the area to give Tigers a comfortable cushion heading towards the interval.
However, Wing weren't buried yet and defenders Chris Lawford and Conor Goodger had to be on top of their games to thwart any Wing attacks, the latter making a particularly fine last ditch challenge to deny Wing a certain goal.
Right on half time, Wing scored what turned out to be their consolation from the penalty spot, Tigers' keeper, Alex Eaton, just failing to keep the ball out.
Tigers did not hit the heights in the second half that they had earlier and Wing continued to battle away in difficult conditions to little effect. MOM, Macaulay Conway scored Tigers fifth with a well drilled shot that capped an impressive personal performance.
EATON BRAY LIONS
EB Lions U9 Reds 3 AFC Luton 0
THE Lions started strongly, playing up the slope and with a bitter wind blowing across the pitch.
After five minutes George Oliver put the Lions ahead and for the rest of the first half the attack and midfield of Dax Roe, Jack Quigley, Jack Nevitt and Oliver dominated.
In defence Freddie Mines and Tom Barbato kept the back safe and when goalie Toby Higgs needed to do something he was always in control. At half time the Lions were 1-0 up.
After bringing on Charlie Giblin and Karl Shrowder at half time the Lions came close on many occasions and after 12 minutes Shrowder scored the Lions second and 7 minutes later Shrowder scored again to give the Lions a comfortable 3-0 win.
The Lions played some good passing football and moved forward strongly when in possession and defended well when needed.
Team: Roe, Quigley, Nevitt, Oliver, Barbato, Mines, Higgs, Giblin, Shrowder.
Maulden Magpies U11 7
EB Lions U11 0
LIONS endured bitter conditions to halve their previous losing record against the Magpies.
The home team had netted a stunning 14 times in that last encounter so this weekend's 7-0 defeat reflected some progress in the Lions' performance.
Lions began the opening half in earnest, but a sequence of difficult balls combined with slick conditions underfoot had the boys 3 goals down by the break. Nonetheless, keeper Dan kept his momentum and exhibited some quickfire saves, while bracing defence work from Tom, Adam and Aarin put paid to most of Maulden's attacking drives.
MoM Ben displayed characteristic grit to harry the Magpies' strikers and played a vital role in safeguarding a scoreline which might have plunged still further against the visitors.
A strong midfield, comprising Charlie, Will J, Mason and Chris showed mobility moving forwards as well as in retreat, while Sean made a succession of threatening runs to fire in a handful of shots, slicing wide by the narrowest of margins.
Rotating front men Aaron G and Alex contributed their usual determination to keep the Maulden defenders on their guard throughout, but ultimately Lions were outgunned by the determined and consistent play of their opponents.
WOODSIDE
Great Horwood 8 Woodside Wanderers 1
POOR Woodies came down to earth with a crash this week after a run of good results. Although not as one sided as the scoreline suggests Woodside were generally second best in every department.
Great Horwood were a disciplined side who played to their strengths and Woodies had no answer to their set pieces.
Two early goals straight from corners set the tone and Woodies were always going to be up against it .Going into half time Woodies had only created a couple of half chances and heads were dropping.
A battling second half saw Woodies take the game to their opponents and created some good chances. However this was not a day to try and walk the ball into the goal. Losing possession cheaply only led to their opponents breaking with speed and Woodies going further behind.
Thomas Worden managed a consolation goal for Woodies and MOM Danny White was determined to keep driving forward. However it was a day when almost all the team were well off form and it's back to the drawing board.
Southcott Owls U9 3
Woodside Rovers U9 4
Woodside travelled to Southcott for the local derby and came away with a hard fought win.
It was the Owls who started brighter and scored with in 10 minutes of the kick-off, but Woodside were not going to be denied and scored a cracking volley to level the scores and then took the lead shortly after. Then Woodside hit second gear and completely dominated the rest of the half missing a hat full of chances, but the Owls' keeper saved brilliantly. And from a corner against play the Owls scored to make it 2-2 at half time.
The second started much like the first but Woodside started to pull away scoring two more hard fought goals to create a 4-2 lead with only 5 minutes to play. Woodside knew the Owls had a fight-back mentality from previous meetings, and at times rode their luck, but the game ended 4-3 to Woodside with a very determined performance from all the players.
Team: Steve Hunt, Matthew Pyman, James Culley, Henry Hogg, Fergus Walsh, Adam Sayell, Thomas Williams, Kelsey Wilkes, Mitchell Stephens, Coner Gibbons.
Goals: Kelsey Wilkes (3), Thomas Williams (1).
HEATH PANTHERS
Westoning 0
Heath Panthers U11 Kittens 2
THE Kittens became Tigers as they took the game to Westoning from the start.
Charlie Kaye scored two goals in the first half to get the Kittens' hearts racing. Charlie just missed out on a hat-trick with Danielle Kaye in tow making a few chances for a goal with Kelsey Atkinson doing the same.
In midfield Chloe Pinder and Samantha Davis tackled well and won all the balls. All Kittens defended deep, with the last sub Chantelle Perry being brought on to strengthen the defence.
Well done Toni Kaye for keeping the goals out for us - keep it up. Well done girls you all deserve this 2-0 win.
POM Danielle Kaye.
LINSLADE GREENLEAS
Linslade Greenleas Inter U11 5 Deanshanger Colts
Mustangs U11 5
INTER were forced back into the blocks by a powerful Deanshanger team and before they knew it they were 2 goals down. If it wasn't for George Higginson in goal it could have been a lot worse.
Inter improved when Albie Hall beat three defenders before slotting home. This spurred the Mustangs and they scored two more goals in a five-minute burst. Wesley Russell linked up with Callum Hack who made no mistake from close range.
With half time approaching the referee played a great advantage when Kyle Gallagher set up Hall to score from the narrowest of angles to make it 4-3 at the break.
Inter started the by drawing level with another great finish from Hall. Greenleas defenders, Wesley Russell, Oliver Hill & William Kemp were all having fine games. Wingers Harry Cosby and Matt Leedon were full of running and were probably having their best matches of the season.
Against the run of play Deanshanger regained the lead.
With 10 minutes left Hall won a free kick and scored for his fourth goal of the match.
Greenleas then pushed hard for a winner and were very unlucky when a Brandon Nicholson shot smashed against the post.
Southcott U11 6 AFC Shillington 1
A COMFORTABLE scoreline in a match that was well controlled from start to finish.
After an excellent early save from Elliott Kimber it was one-way traffic as Adams and Scott caused no end of problems. Matt Stacey was impressing his grandparents, ably supported by Chancellor, and the excellent Connor McGarry used trickery on one wing with poacher Prophet on the other.
A mix of last ditch defending, woodwork and excellent goalkeeping coupled with a solid Southcott defence of Andrews, Murtagh and Parkert kept it at 3-0 half time.
In the second period it was tinker time and Matt Stacey was introduced to terrorise the visitors.
Further goals followed in scenes similar to the first period.
At the end Shillington pulled back a consolation when a cross was turned past stand-in keeper Murtagh. Goals - A Stacey (2), Prophet (2), Scott and Adams.
