Woodside Wanderers U12s and Leighton Town U8s
Woodside Rovers U12 2
Woodside Wanderers 1
It is difficult to name individuals, when every single player who took part in this in-house cup decider created a game of fine shot stopping, quality defending, fierce midfield battles and breathtaking passing, movement and attacks.
The first 10 minutes saw intriguing posturing, as both sides tried to gain ascendancy. This was a joy to watch and gradually the shots started to occur.
Rovers hit the crossbar and should have ended the half in the lead, but found the Wanderers' keeper on top form. Wanderers, however, defended with style and they could have taken the lead themselves on a number of occasions. A blistering shot was expertly stopped by the Rovers keeper, who was also on top form.
A disputed goal for Rovers started the second half when the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line. This galvanised Wanderers' defence and they dominated the next 10 minutes and deservedly levelled after a fine passing attack. Rovers, however, always looked a threat and as the battle raged the threat became a reality, when Rovers broke away to regain the lead.
The match ended with both sides continuing to rip into each other. The coaches of both sides praised their players and thanked them for creating a match of the highest quality.
Leighton Town U8
v Wing Raiders
Team: Pat Kelly, Stan Rainbow, Lauren Brooker, Max Pickering, Jordan Gardner, Olly Miller, Ben Hendrie, Ethan Rodgers, Luca Bunce.
This was a friendly with a twist as the coach of Leighton Town, Laurence Parker, and the coach of Wing Raiders, Kevin McConnell, are lifelong friends and both were looking for a good performance from their young stars.
Town moved the ball around nicely and took an early lead when Ethan riffled a low shot into the corner. Both sides continued to push forward but it was Town who put together a great passing move with Olly and Jordan combining well to set Lauren up to score her first goal.
Max Pickering was a terrier in midfield and worked hard to support the team along with Ethan who ran his socks off attacking and defending to make sure Town kept a clean sheet.
When Raiders did break free Pat Kelly was an awesome force between the posts and made some brilliant saves.
As the game reached the later stages Luca scored a fine hat-trick and Ethan added another, with some great defending from Stan and Ben to keep the Raiders at bay.
The bragging rights for this one went to Laurence.
MOM – Luca Bunce for a solid all-round performance and a great hat-trick.
