A burst watermains pipe close to the Tesco superstore caused major disruption to motorists travelling through Leighton Buzzard and Linslade.
As engineers worked fast to fix the burst pipe, a section of the road from the Old Road and Stoke Road junction leading to Leighton Road was closed, with four way traffic lights installed as a temporary measure.
It is believed the pipe burst at around 1.30pm yesterday (March 11).
Emma Staples from Anglian Water said: “We are sorry for the disruption caused to road users in Leighton Buzzard yesterday and today.
“A burst to a large water main near TESCO yesterday meant we needed to close the road in order to remove the escaped water and carry out the pipe repair as quickly as possible.
“Our engineers worked through the night to do this and at the same time managed to keep the majority of customers on water as normal.
“We’re now working hard to reinstate the road and have it back to normal by this evening’s rush hour. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and grateful to road users and customers for their patience while we do this.”
