Men charged after 10 raids at shops in past fortnight


Two men have been charged in relation to a robbery at the Co-op in Heath and Reach, plus a series of other shop raids in the Luton and Dunstable area over the past two weeks.

George McAward, 32, of The Mall, Dunstable, has been charged with seven counts of robbery, three counts of attempted robbery, and seven counts of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

Scott Cerqua, 36, of Hitchin Road, Luton, has been charged with conspiring to commit robbery on 10 separate occasions.

During the robbery at the Co-op in Bird’s Hill, Heath and Reach on Sunday, March 8, three men entered at about 9.30pm and are alleged to have threatened staff with what appeared to be a piece of wood, before stealing money, cigarettes, and alcohol.

As well as this incident Mr Cerqua and Mr McAward have also been charged in connection with:

February 28, March 3 & 7, Albert Road, Luton.

March 1, High Street South, Dunstable; Markyate Road, Slip End; and Wellington Street, Luton.

March 1 & 6, Common Road, Kensworth.

March 10 Poynters Road, Dunstable.

The men were arrested on Wednesday (March 11) and were remanded in custody to appear before Luton magistrate’s court today (Friday, March 13).

A 27-year-old man from Luton who was also arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of robbery has been bailed with stringent conditions pending further investigations.
