School is in top 5% nationally for Year 1phonics

The majority of pupils (97%) at Overstone Combined School in Wing were working at the expected level in this year’s phonics check for Year 1 pupils.

This high level of achievement puts them in the top 5% of all schools in England.

The school has consistently achieved higher than the national average and this year reached a very high standard.

Nick Gibb, Minister of State for School Reform told Overstone it was “a tremendous achievement and points to a high standard of phonics teaching in your school”.

A school spokesman said: “This achievement ensures that all children have a firm foundation for reading from which to develop. The school is delighted and thanks all pupils and staff involved in this vital area of a child’s early development.”
