Fire officers out in force because of Storm Doris

Storm Doris has wreaked havoc across Bedfordshire, with trees falling, roofs blowing off and even a teenager impaled in the wrist by railings.

Beds Fire and Rescue Service stated there were reports of fallen trees in Church Road, Tottenhoe this morning, as well as other fallen trees on the A6 by the Sharnbrook Hotel, on the A1 near Sandy northbound to the Black Cat roundabout and by the Bull Public House, London Road, Bedford.

In Bury Way, Shillington, firefighters assisted following the collapse of a chimney and a large number of slates falling from roofs into the road. On-call Firefighters from Shefford Community Fire Station cordoned off the road while awaiting the attendance of the UK Power networks to deal with power lines and local contractors to clear away the debris

The roof of Bondaglass Voss Ltd, Sunderland Rd, Sandy was blown onto East Coast railway line. Beds Fire and Rescue Service notified the rail authority and a train was forced to stop as the driver then moved debris off the track.

In Russett Road, Dunstable, firefighters assisted after the roof was blown off of a building into the road.

At The Academy, Church Road, Stotfold, firefighters attended to assist paramedics after a 16 year old was impaled by the wrist on some railings.

Leighton Middle School was attended by firefighters to assist after the roof began to come away from the Old School House.

The roof at Tool Station, Cambridge Road, Bedford was also seriously affected by the wind.

Passing firefighters also dealt with traffic lights and signage affected by the wind on the A421 towards Junction 13 with the M1.

So far there have been no road traffic collisions reported to the Fire Service.

<Reconsider travel plans – is it necessary to travel?

<If you do need to travel, take warm clothes and extra supplies with you in case of delays

<Take extra care when driving – plan your route, leave extra time for your journey and be careful when overtaking other vehicles

<Make contact with vulnerable or elderly neighbours to check on their welfare
