Leighton Buzzard should be proud of their sixth formers at both its upper schools, says the chairman on the town’s branch of Mencap.
The charity holds a holiday club for young people with learning disabilities every summer and chairman Gaye Beattie says Cedars and Vandyke have volunteered in their droves to help out.
Usually about 35 youngsters between eight and 17 help out with the activities.
Gaye said: “Because we offer so much we need one-to-one volunteers to enable our youngsters to get the most out of their time with us and to achieve their potential.
“In the last couple of weeks, we have been into assemblies at both Vandyke and Cedars Upper Schools and so far about 75 to 80 students have made a provisional commitment to come along in the summer and be part of our team.
“It is no exaggeration to say that we can’t run the scheme without their help; and it is also no exaggeration to say that if the past years are anything to go by, they will do themselves, their parents and their school great credit.”
