Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway volunteers are celebrating reaching their initial target of £50,000 to build a new station at Pages Park – just a month after the appeal was launched.
The rapid flow of funds will allow the green light to be given for the construction of the new building to begin at the end of October this year
“With the matched funding offer from one of our members, our £50,000 becomes £100,000 and with funds already in hand we now have the £200,000 necessary to enable a start to be made on the construction,” said chairman Terry Bendall.
He added: “It’s a great achievement, made possible by a few very generous donations from members and supporters to whom we are most grateful.”
But despite this rapid progress, Tery warns there is a lot more to be done.
“We now have enough to put up the new building, but we will still need to raise another £90,000 by the end of the year to complete the fitting out of the interior and community rooms and add exterior details like the platform canopy.
“In many ways, we have done the easy bit, by looking to our ‘nearest and dearest’ for the support necessary to get the project off the ground. We now need to look to the wider community to help us get the job finished.”
Typical of the support that the railway is looking for now is that which has come from the Leighton Buzzard Brewery, which has offered a donation for every barrel of Narrow Gauge Ale sold.
Other local companies have contacted the railway offering to run sponsored events.
